Another vehicle weight/registration discussion

Getting ready to try and get my HINO truck-based camper registered as an RV, or at least registered in a non-commercial category and could use some advice.

HINO, in case everybody's not aware, is a branch of the Toyota motor group, generally comparable to Mitsubishi or UD/Nissan, except that their trucks have won in the heavy truck category of the Paris-Dakar rally numerous times :).
In 2005 they began offering a conventional cab truck which is assembled in the United States but that's a different topic.

My truck is a 1998 SG model(COE), 2wd, of course. Manufacturer's GVW is 32995lbs.
At present, my truck weighs around 15k lbs.; by the time I'm done with modifications, I might be around 26k, but not nessecarily over.
My conversion meets the standard requirements in most states for registration as a RV- permanently installed heat/plumbing/stove, etc..

It's been fairly well established that RV's over 26k lbs are being allowed without a CDL in a lot of places, but not everywhere. Any thoughts or experience on registering a commercial truck chassis as a RV and whether there would be any advantage to registering at or below 26k?

As a commercial vehicle, the states seem to be pretty uniform about "downplating" not being a valid way to be exempt from the CDL requirement.
But if Recreational Vehicles are really completely exempt form the CDL requirement, then registering over 26k shouldn't be an issue anyway, right?

Oh, and for the time being, vehicle is going to be registered in Minnesota, Wisconsin, or possibly Illinois but interested in traveling in most of the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Due to a similar discussion around here a long time ago, I contacted the makers of Kingsley Coaches, and confirmed that you do not need a CDL for an RV, no matter the size (in the US).

Agreed, that's what I hear most of the time. Can't think of an exact instance but once in awhile I hear something from a credible source that would indicate otherwise.
The other followup to the original question would be whether RV's are still exempt from weigh stations in all states, even at heavier weights.
I know very similar topics have been covered pretty well here at least once, but I've spent enough time in the CDL paperwork maze as an owner/operator to know what my priorities are. Less paperwork, more fun, please.

And finally, like I said before- how do Mexico and the Canadians view the matter?

Something that was hinted at in a post somewhere around here is insurance for vehicles of this type. I would look into this aspect as it might force some particular direction in registration.

I remember a discussion regarding Totterhomes (campers built on a heavy truck chassis) at RV.net regarding how if the vehicle was registered as an RV, you didn't need a CDL. Of course the professional truckers on the thread thought that was a hoot.

that's what I'm thinking; when I'm done my rig is still going to look a lot like a 30' (overall length) box truck so I need to do my homework; seems like expecting to not get pulled over for bypassing a weigh station would be like playing the lottery so I want to get the facts as best I can and, like I said- keeping it under 26k is a realistic enough goal if I need it to be.
