Another Wildernest ..er

Waahoo! Just found a compact model Wildernest for my '03 Tacoma! Couldn't sleep last night thinking about it!!!! If I tell you how little I paid for it you'll all surely hate me. :wings: Not real sure how 'good' of a deal I got though as I've not yet opened it up to see the condition of the tent?

BUT the shell looks really good! The fiberglass is still kinda shiny even and the guy I got it from 'assured me' the tent was OK? ...mabe a 'few' tears? All the glass is original and I got a KEY to the lock! A little splaying but not bad and something I can pull in (I think?). Also came with the original built-ins for the truck bed ...something I didn't even expect to get!!!

I'll snap a few pics later and add 'em here soon. Gota get a new back window installed on my Tacoma to match the slider in the Nest shell before mounting it. Meanwhile I gota get it out the wifes F350 and resting on some supports, sell my old shell and see how the WN's gonna fit my truck? Maybe get camping a night or two before the snow flies?

Later, Steve

here's some pics of the splaying which I hope I can pull in w/o stretching my box on the the truck? Right side is the worst but not bad? Steve

Rear window opening

My expierience with slaying has been when the shell is installed it can be corrected for the most part then and there. This is cause by the shell sitting and spreading while sitting, like a folded piece of paper opening over time

Thanks for the info Dave!

I'm finding that a new rear slider windshield for my truck is gonna cost more than the Wildernest! Dang.

Steve.

Name plate?

Where abouts is the date stamp or serial number located on the 'Nest? (or is there one?)

BTW I opened it up yesterday to inspect the canvas. She looks pretty darn good for 15-20 year old tent! Albeit a little dirty on the corner edges where road grim seeps in under the lid. Seams looked like some one recently resealed them maybe in the last couple years? And I didn't see any rips or tears yet? The spring sounded a little "creaky"? I only opened the lid to about 90 degrees because it being unmounted I was worried it'd flip over not being held down on it's opposite side.

Are there any pictures around the forum of how the built-ins are supposed to fit together?

Thanks again for all the support and info ...so glad I found this group! Steve

If those springs can have a tendency to move the bed rail(s) to the point that the tailgate won't close or pops open then I highly recommend some bed braces ala full bedded pre-runners.
My '84 was run long enough w/o a tailgate & with some of the bottom edge of the rear of the bed cut off that I'm fighting this w/o a 'Nest.

I know it makes it a pain to slide things in and out, but what I would suggest is a diagonal from under that tie-down loop to the near tailgate hinge bolts. Cut a plate to fit under each, with some extra surface to weld the diagonal to. Since it'll be mostly in tension a small tube, say 1/2" Sq. x .065" wall, will do.
I need to do this same thing & soon! I'm thinking to tie this into some other structure, like the support for my water jug & tool box, at the same time.
