These look very similar to industrial electrical junction boxes. They come in all sizes, some with gaskets and high IP ratings, plus nice latches sometimes. Plenty of used ones on ebay.

I wouldn't mount it backwards like that. Mine is "mirrored" they're meant to mount on the drivers side to not block the license plate. I would mount it as pictured because of how it attaches to the sheet metal. Closer to the hinges the better.

My handle is accessible, I wouldn't call it "wide open" but its easy enough

Another question.

What do you think the weigh capacity is on each door when open? What is the weight of the stuff you have in/on that container?
