That's a good idea, Brian. But I'm not sure how much cutting I can do before the spouse says I'm making things ugly so I have to be careful. 
I found a pantry shelving unit that is made to hang over a door and it is so cheap it comes in two pieces. Terrible Amazon reviews. One of the pieces fits pretty well so I stuck that in for a trip. Not great, but it's not bad. There is about 5" of space below the opening on the cabinet (the door isn't tall enough which makes sense for a closet) that I can still stuff bags into.
Maybe I'll just store food elsewhere. If I sand down all the rough bits in the wardrobe, I could probably cram all our parkas and sweatshirts in there. Should probably sand out all the burrs in the cabinets by the bed too. Tight spaces with rough edges=ripped clothes.
