Any one build storage for your JKU?

I am about to start building a rear shelf with a cooler slide in the rear of my JKU. I am planning on leaving the rear seats in place. The shelf will hold two largish totes and 2 jerry cans. Underneath a large cooler on one side with a storage area on the left side. I am doing the JK Rear bumper water tank so I need to incorporate a water pump and some electrical stuff some how into my shelving system. (I know water and electricity :Wow1: ) Trying to keep it some what simple, not super heavy although I will be using MDF which is pretty heavy stuff but easy to work with I am thinking I will either carpet it or use bed liner.

If any one else has built a storage system for their JKU please share your ideas/photos.

Synergy makes a great solution though it's not a shelf. It's a basket that mounts to the roll cage in the rear. Plenty of room underneath for a fridge on a slide, a drawer system, or as I'm doing a Brute Cooler on a slide along with my camp kitchen.

Install on my JKU is in progress as I type but here's a couple pictures of the basket installed on a Synergy project JKU. Doesn't interfere with a standard soft top or a trektop. Allows for a huge level of functionality.

I had one installed on a prior JKU and used it to secure 2 65 liter backpacks loaded with camping gear as well as packs for my two younger kids (both 15 L daypacks), underneath I run a large Brute cooler and a camp kitchen on a shelf and under the shelf I've got an 8 person expedition level tent, recovery gear, 4 small folding camp chairs and a small folding camp table. Will try to post up a picture of the set-up in my new JKU once I get it back from the shop.

I really like that basket, probably the best one I have seen. However the price is pretty steep! I am sticking with MDF for now, but some day I will probably upgrade to something a bit cleaner looking like that.

Aluminum is easy to work with, durable and light.

FWIW,

I used scrap aluminum sheet in a steel frame with full length drawer slides, then installed padding and I/O carpeting on top. The most expensive part was the full slides. This is in an old Scout, but I plan to do something very similar for the JKURX when it comes in.
It was very easy to build. It bolts in, and slides out pretty easy. I can handle it by myself, but it is easier with two people, due to the size.
The drawer is 34" wide x 48"deep x 9-1/2" tall.
What I like about this, is that it provides a bit of theft deterrent storage, and a flat floor for the dogs.
For the JKURX, the rear seat will be removed, and in it's place will probably go water tank & fridge. The box will be kept just short of the underfloor storage tray, so that it's still useful. Next time, I'll use stamped metal for the frame, instead of the angle and square tubing (it doesn't need to be this strong).
Hope this may give you an idea to build an even better box.:)

I removed the back seat from my '13 JKUR and had a friend build a steel shelf to level the floor...with trapdoors to access storage underneath. A Tuffy enclosure gives me secure storage in the back. A 63-quart ARB fridge fits perfectly between the front seats and the Tuffy enclosure. I access the fridge from the rear passenger door and use Velcro straps to the sound bar to hold the lid open when necessary. The fridge in the photo is a smaller Waeco.

That looks like a quality retail piece!

I have the ace cargo basket in mine. Its great for recovery gear and stuff I need quick access to. It bolts onto your hardtop holes (compatible with both tops) and I ran a bike lock through it and around the roll bar to keep it in the jeep while unattended. Its around 300

This is brilliant!

Im busy working out a way to carry two Front Runner footwell water tanks in that space, and have a flat floor on top of them.

Any chance to share a drawing or measurements for your design?

Moabian that is a great idea! Would you be willing to share the measurements????

I would if I had them. It was built by a friend of mine who does custom metal work. I'm now having him build a small rack to go over my Teraflex Tire Carrier/Hinge.
