anyone ever imported a diesel HiLux to the US?

She actually loves the old Tacoma and Nest. She scolds me every time I threaten to sell it.

The whole Air Stream thing is...we both always wanted one...it was one of those.."when we retire and sell everything off..." thoughts. More I think about...the more I don't want one. You're paying of the cool factor and that is about it.

Be a good 17 years before we can share retirement together....I'll be dirt bagging it until then though... ;):D

What? I thought she wanted you to get a new truck.

AS definitely has the cool factor. But from what I've seen, quality is there as well. I don't think people would keep buying them if they fell apart like some of these other trailers/5th wheels I've seen. Just think of it as the Toyota of trailers.

She does...a bigger one at that so "she" would feel safer with me driving around all the big semi's and 3/4-1 Tons here.

But she wants me to keep the Taco regardless...told me to never get rid of it.

The AS dealer is literally 5 minutes from us. Was up there the other week looking at them. The quality is there for sure...and definitely had the cool factor...I mean...caused my heart to beat a little faster and my hands to shake with excitement. So I totally get it. Not sure if I should be allowed to own one though... ;)

@Clutch I know how to kill 2 birds with one hail storm. An acquaintance just bought an almost new airstream for $2k. The only downside is it looks like a golf ball! You could drag it anywhere and not worry about it. It's whats inside that counts right?

Hey there you go!

Have a wife and husband client, they restored an old one to "save money"...said they would never do that again. But had one hell of a time touring the country when they did get it finished. She planned to turn it into an artist studio after they were finished. But her neighbor ************** (that whole not zoned for RV's BS)...and had to sell it. Guy around the corner from us has two sitting in his driveway...one AS and one Argosy that he just finished painting turquoise, which looks pretty sharp. I would destroy it but...not to say I haven't been looking at restorations for ideas.

https://campereparadise.com There is a decent Alaskan in there too...but my gut says, run away!

There are always anomalies. I know people with Land cruisers and 4Runners with a ton of issues.

yeah, me. I have a 98 4runner 5 spd/locker I bought with 177k in January. Everyone on the interwebs said, HOLY ******** BUY IT< THE MILES ARE SO LOW, IT"LL RUN FOREVER!!!!!

It now has 192k. I've replaced the MAF, IAC, throttle body, ITRE's, OTRE's, LBJ's, right rear wheel bearing, steering rack bushings, sway bar end links, one coil pack, and some other stuff I'm forgetting. It currently needs complete new suspension, LCA and UCA bushings, CV joints, the timing belt/water pump service, new fan belts, something is wrong with the fueling and I can't figure out what yet, transfer case vibrates badly above 50mph, pretty sure it needs a new steering rack, A/C is toast, etc. The engine, transmission, and power windows are about the only thing that still work, knock on wood.

That whole Toyota reliability thing is mostly internet hype. Sure you can get some high miles out of them. My just rolled 378K...but it took some work to get it there. You can get a lot go miles out of most anything, as long as you're willing to keep on fixing it.

Yeah. I know that now. I’m currently trying to decide whether it’s worth it to keep patching her up. I mean, at this point I essentially need to replace the entire suspension and steering system, plus do a major service, plus fix whatever is going on with the fueling. Considering I only paid around $3k and it has a rebuilt title, I’m not sure it’s worth it. I love that truck, and it’s taken me some of the most amazing places in the US I’ve ever been, but holy hell im tired of pumping money and work into it.

Man, I almost bought almost that same rig a week ago. Guy wanted $4k for this '97 4Runner, SR5, 5-sp with 180k miles. Garaged, so it looked very clean. Sold quick, so took away the temptation for me. Too bad about your 4Runner, but once you get all those little issues worked out, it should be a good rig for you.

I hope so. To be fair, I’ve beaten the ******** out of it on trails for quite a few of the 15k miles I’ve put on it.

For $3000...can't complain too much.

Have mine going on 16-17 years now. Has taken me on a lot of adventures...so there is that sentimental thing. Over the years I have rebuilt everything but the engine/trans/transfer case. But nothing all at once...once or twice a year I have to get it fixed. So me saying I am tired of fixing it...in all reality isn't all that bad.

I do hate putting so many commuter miles on it, doing about 15K/year....plus 10K on top of that going out exploring. Kinda want to park it, and just get a dedicated commuter...but I love driving the thing so much. Maybe I need two...

Every time I feel like I am getting sick of it, some dude stops me to chat me up about. Just tonight was getting pizza after work and a guy stopped me to tell me how cool my truck is. Asked me if it got 30 mpg...I laughed!

guess so. It's taken me all over the CO and UT backcountry and gotten through some hairy situations like it was nothing, so it's not all bad. That damn E-locker button is like a cheat code in a video game when I'm out on the trail. Thinking about turning into a full on trail rig and getting something else for a daily so it's not a pain in my ass when it needs work.

I’ve had plenty of other vehicles, some good, some complete ******** (cough cough, Jeep). There was hands down nothing I understood the engineering of (accept maybe a 92 Chevy 4wd with a 350 in it) or preferred driving over my Tacoma.

All 5 of my Toyota’s and the several other I’ve worked on or maintained over the years were reliable vehicles (except the 3.0 in my 92 4Runner, but there were some elements of beating the piss out of that thing) that were intuitive to work on.

Not like some Honda with adjustable valves or 8 reasons for erratic idling issues, or a Dodge Cummins where you or a mechanic just installed a part that didn’t fix the problem just to have to be pulled apart again, and again. I saw waaaay more issues that were more expensive and just plain dumb on those trucks over several model years, hopefully they fixed their issues with the decades of piece of ******** automatic transmissions they put in those things.

I’ll take a Toyota any day
