Specifically, a first gen 79-83 model ?
Any pics or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

1st gen 4runner here (more like a 2nd-gen Truck), but with the truck camper in it, it's a lot like a reg-cab. Works fine for 2 people. I don't actually "expo" it but I could. I just use it for occasional camping. I don't ever wish for more space. Have fun!

Check out the Collection of Builds up top. There are a few in there, although none in your year range, I don't think. I love the body style of 79-83, but for an expo rig, reliability issues would give me pause. Unless you're rebuilding the whole thing, then that would be cool.

So, if by "Expo", you mean buy a bunch of crap to hang off of it to impress others, then no.

If you mean throw your crap in the bed and go, then yes, I guess I "Expo" it.

I have an '83 short bed. I'm sort of on the fence with the bed. The single wall sides have taken a beating over the years. I found an aluminum short bed tray off an '83 in Australia. He wants a couple hundred Aussie for it and I could get it over here for less than a grand US. Or, I could buy an A/C tig (15-1600)and the materials to build my own and my own. Much cheaper to buy the used one. My truck is used and has a few dents, so a used tray would be fine. I could build one out of steel square tubing, I have a bunch of chromoly round tubing, so I don't know. I may just sand it down and camo it. I like the patina on the cab, though. I also need to build a front bumper for my extra Warn 8274.

My buddy is getting everything together to put a 3RZ in his '85 4Runner and I'm getting his very well built 22RE and all the trimmings, but that is a little way off.

I've spent a lot of time exploring in my first gen--the Rot Box. Original 20R with a later 5 speed. The truck could do no wrong until my family grew. Now it sits collecting dust :(

What size tires? They look huge. Stock gearing? I'll take a pic of mine today if I get time.

I don't guess you could say "ExPo" but I daily drive, offroad, camp, etc out of my '81 Pickup. There are times when I'm not driving that I get to wanting something with some power (I even debate a 350 swap) or a newer more comfortable truck, but as soon as I hop in it and take off I absolutely love it!

I'm begging to more and more. These things are tanks, I trust it to take me where I ever want and need to go!

Are those IFS truck wheels or Land Cruiser? Spacers?

On the rim it will maybe say "offset" "JJ08" or something like that or there is a 1 or 2 digit number. What is written there? I have a set of Land Cruiser wheels in that style, so I can tell you if yours are LC or IFS Hilux/4Runner.

I tried the LC wheels on my truck, but they hit the tie rod end. Even FZJ 16" wheels wouldn't fit. I have some FJ60 chromies that fit fine and are tucked in nice. I'm gonna use those.

I ran 37's for a while but went back to 33's and 35's. Gearing is 5.29 with 4.7 Marlin Crawler gears in the t-case... I actually swapped in a Wagoneer D44 up front. The steering, increased width and brakes were a vast improvement over the stock axle.

Good times.
