It seems like everyone is getting their ham license, I have considered it for some time but I dont know much about what is required. I checked out ARRL website, it was ok but I need to know what to study and where to take the test. any info will help :victory:

Go here: http://www.qrz.com/xtest2.html and start taking the Technicians exam. The questions here are from the actual question pool for the exam. I suggest passing the first 10 sets or so 90% or above, then start taking them randomly...when you start passing them randomly out of order, you are ready my padawan.

May the Force be with you!

Another way is to buy a book that has the questions, and study that until you are comfortable. Then take a few practice tests as stated above, then go take the test. Look online for a local test session. Local clubs will be able to help you. Some may also offer classes. I used the books by Gordon West and recommend them highly. Every question is in the book, along with the possible answers, the correct answer, and an explanation with key words highlighted. The ARRL also has books.

I read the Technician book through twice and passed with 100%. Did the same with the General and passed with less than 100%.

I studied on this site for about 4 days (a few hours each day) and aced the general license exam. When I'm ready to start studying again, I figure another 5-10 days of studying and I can take the extra class exam.

The adaptive testing is great for preparing you for the actual exam.

Testing information can be found here:

Some other links here including links to some of the practice tests already mentioned. I found the QRZ tests helpful but printing out the test pool and looking at only the correct answers was also helpful.

I borrowed the ARRL technician's license book and studied for about an hour a day prior to taking my test, and did just fine.

I just studied the practice tests online. They cycle through all the questions on the exam. I got close to 100% on my technicians test.

The best thing to do after you take the test is find a good Elmer. They test you on thing you probably won't use much (allowing you to have music in the background if you are transmitting from the space station) but you have to figure out the correct way to transmit and use you call sign and things like that on your own.

Take the practice tests at QRZ. Understand the wavelength to frequency relationship, and the few power related algorithms (i.e. voltage = amps x resistance & watts = voltage x amps) and it's a snap.

Something else you may want to consider, http://www.hamradioclass.org/.
They have a podcast/mp3 that you can down load and listen to on the way to work. I did that, did the online and read the books.

The tech is not that hard of a test.
