Apple cancels Aperture

C7 = Capture One or do you mean the Nokia product?

I still find it amazing that you claim to have started in photography about a year after I started using Aperture! You have some nice work on your website. And your photos of Havana bring back memories. (Looks like you were there in the winter.)

I just found an online video from Scott Kelby & Matt Kloskowski (along with RC Concepcion) that gives good info on how to migrate from Aperture to Lightroom, and it deals with the Package verses Reference library stuff quite succinctly. It's a free webcast with registration: http://kelbyone.com/aperture-to-lightroom/

Aperture to Lightroom:
THE SWITCH IS ON!
Come and join the Lightroom Pros: Scott Kelby & Matt Kloskowski (along with RC Concepcion) for a free Webcast where we'll teach you, step-by-step how to make the transition from Aperture to Lightroom fast, easy and fun. We'll show you how to make your switch painless and hassle-free, plus we'll have plenty of giveaways throughout and we'll be taking your questions live on the air. You don't want to miss this fun, informative event, brought to you free exclusively from your friends at KelbyOne.

Another Snark!

Scot Kelby is so deep in Adobe's pocket ... (Not as bad as the folks from Luminous Landscape, but I digress.) :)

That said, I have several of his books.

The interesting subtext of this, gleaned from other fora, is that most Aperture users don't want to migrate to Lightroom and, as they try out Capture One and DXO products, they are discovering how limited they can be, compared to Aperture. So while we may be a minority, we tend to be a devoted one.

As my final shots on this:

If you don't use Aperture today, why should you care? You have already chosen software that you like better.

If you do use Aperture today, relax; you have lots of time to explore alternatives. If one of those alternatives, like Lightroom or another system, gives you something that you need, TODAY, then, by all means, migrate. You will be migrating for the right reason, that is you are choosing a program that better fits your needs and that is a decision that you should have taken even if Aperture 4, 5, and 6, had just be released. (Fans of history can review the discussions that Trevor and I had on this subject, years ago.)

If none of them give you better results, TODAY, then sit tight. You will have plenty of time to look again in two years if Photos doesn't do what you need. But if it does, then (if I read the press releases correctly) your existing Aperture library will plug and play with no problems. And you will be getting all kinds of new goodies, including the possibility of using plugins without creating TIFFs.

Interesting that I noticed that Apple still has Aperture available on custom built Macs at the Apple Store.
