Are Digicams Doomed

Pocket-cams perhaps, but the simple fact is you can't break the laws of physics. The sensor in my phone's camera is great, the trouble is the super-small lens. There is no way to make a phone small enough to be convenient that holds a lens big enough to be useful for any serious photography.

Camera phones won't replace single-purpose cameras for photo enthusiasts. But camera phones are perfect for the quick snap that will end up on Facebook. If the desired end product is a 320x240 jpg, a camera phone does fine.

The problem is that there are far fewer DSLRs sold than point-and-shoot models. If people stop buying P&S cameras, how will Canon, Nikon and the others stay in business?

By licensing their technology to phone vendors

Am I the only person left who doesn't like using my phone for anything other than communications? I have an iPhone that I use only for texting, email, and calling. I have a camera (or three) that I use only for photography. And I have a Sony Reader with no Wifi, no touchscreen, no 3g - guess what I use it for? Maybe I've got the world's worst set of paranoias or something, but I don't wanna be taking a picture of a wave and lose my phone and my book (and my GPS and...) because my hand slipped or I fell. Similarly, I don't like wasting the battery on my phone for anything but its intended purposes.
