Aren't You Guys Miserable?

i was born and raised in houston so the heat and humidity don't bother me as much. 100F and 80% humidity? no problem, gimme a hammock and i'm good. :D

Obviously it depends on climate like everyone has said.
I grew up in Oregon and never lived in a home with air conditioning, if that tells you anything. For a few weeks in the summer we left the windows open. Camping was never an issue, most places that warm up so much also cool down at night (especially at elevation), and are not so humid. The high desert gets very hot during the day but again it usually cools down enough at night to be comfortable.

I'm in Kentucky now unfortunately and just bought a truck camper, I doubt I'll use it much here in the middle of summer as the heat/humidity drives me nuts. I didn't order it with a/c because I didn't want the extra height, weight, and to lug around a generator. I'm moving back to Oregon soon and the fantastic vents will work just fine 99% of the time.

I have an ac on the back window opening of my camper, never used it, but its there.
And, yes, I am miserable out camping at all times and cant wait to get back home ;)

We camp (2 adults and 3 kids) most of the summer. But it isn't really camping as most of you know it on this forum. We camp in a 40' motorhome and pull a Honda van.

My goal is to get a much smaller and more nimble camper/truck to use while ATVing and just camping at the end of the trail, so to speak. Usually, it will be me and 1 or 2 of the kids and many times just me.

We live in Central Texas so it gets rather hot. Most of my/our trips will be to the mountains, but gosh it takes forever to get out of Texas from where we are at.

I think I am narrowing my choice down to a Northstar with AC with a 3/4 ton 4x4. Haven't picked the brand of truck yet either. I am looking at the F250 and Ram 2500 in the mid 2000 year ranges.

Suggestions would be great as I like to learn from the mistakes of others :)

What about a swamp cooler? The hottest camping I did was probably at Ft. Polk, La in July and August, but then I got use to it. Another hot spot was Ft. Sam Houston, Tx, and yes even worse would be Ft. Hood,Tx. I was getting a small window unit that is actually a protable, it cools about a 12X12 room, but as the temp gets at the 100 mark, I'm sure I would want to put it overhead and sit in front of it.

I'm aware of sailors using swamp coolers or water coolers dripping water over fins and a fan.

I have AC in the back wall of the 2005 FWC Hawk. It was ordered from the factory by the PO. I would not have ordered it if I bought new, but after last summer camping and using the Hawk, I couldn't be without it now.

I'm in the Northeast and camp up and down the eastern seaboard. My kids and I would have been _miserable_ without the AC. That little window unit just cools down the Hawk beautifully, and we sleep like rocks all night long.

Highly recommended if you camp in humid areas.

I met a Boondocker at an amateur radio event and he keeps his Cargo Trailer Home cool with a MightyKool Evaporative Cooler (note the small evap cooler by the door).
