Yes indeed. Astute observation. This is a new design Stage 1. The top door was added along with an opening in the bottom of the case to allow access to the cubby when the drawer is fully extended. I have managed to store in the cubby a tool roll, a small repair supplies bag, winch controller and the D handle to a shovel. There is still a little bit of room left over as you can see from the pictures.
The other reason for the top door design is that when the drop down tail gate table is deployed, the drawer cannot be fully extended, the top door give access to the remainder of the drawer.
