AT Tacoma Habitat: Official Thread

Thank you both for the responses!

The overhang, how low will it be towards the roof line of the Tacoma's? I envision myself buying a flat roof rack for the roof and putting a storage box or two in the very front to maximize storage space as much as possible. Will this be possible? I think it will depend on how low the overhang is so it does not hit the rear of the roof rack.

The overhang is 23" from the bed rail of the truck. You would not have enough room under the over hang for a roof rack. We are working with Paul May at Equipt for a K9 rack to fit in the remaining roof space that will be approximately 40" L x 50" W. Here is a picture looking down on top of an access cab. The remaining real estate would be no different on a DCSB

Mario, although I missed seeing you at the recent AZ Sportsman's Expo, I did get to stop by to take a peek at the new product. The new Tacoma Habitat looks to be a substantial evolutionary design enhancement which was impressive from what I saw of the prototype. It's great to see the AT team continuing to push the envelope on their product offerings. All the best of success with this new product! Wade

Wade, sorry to have missed you! Glad to know that you had a chance to look it over given your frame of reference as a JK Habitat owner. We are excited about the versatility of the product and what we will do with it moving forward. Hope to see you at the Overland Expo in May!

It looks like it requires removal/moving the sharkfin XM antenna. Even if you don't have to remove it, I doubt it would work well.

I wonder how hard it would be to relocate it.

Awesome, glad its being worked on to have a flat storage rack on there along with your Habitat. This will provide valuable real estate for an overlander. Keep up the good work. This Habitat is making me want to sell my 4runner and buy a Tacoma just so I can buy a Habitat!

I recently was on a Baja overlanding trip and one person had a Tacoma with a flippac and I loved the concept. One night was extra chilly and windy so the owner said lets all jump in the back of the bed of the Tacoma. Man we literally fit 7-8 people in there for a few ours talking and having a good time. That pretty much sold me on it. Now with a Habitat it just sweetens up the experience.

On my 2015 Tacoma the wires to the sharkfin are part of a wire loom for other cab electronic like lights, etc., so it would be very difficult to move. I have an FWC Eagle on mine and there is no XM reception at all from the sharkfin but with a Metra euro car to male Motorola and Metra Lexus radio antenna adapter you can use a third party 'puck' antenna, which I put just in from of my windshield. If you have in dash GPS it uses the shark fin too and you can use a Kenwood Garmin nav antenna for that.

There are probably other ways around this as well.

My flippac is getting to be 20yo and my Nissan 720 is hitting 400k... I sure would like to hear some results from fitting this on a Frontier or two. I'm not a Taco guy...

I found this http://www.bodenzord.com/archives/1449
I don't know if it would work for a shark fin which has GPS, XM and FM internals. And of course it doesn't solve XM reception issues. I have spent the last 2 weeks with an RTT partially obscuring my shark fin and FM and GPS were fine, but XM was spotty.

So is there a video of the habitat opening and closing yet? doesn't seem to be much information on It for those of us that may not be able to take a look at one in person for some time.

+1. My guess is since they've sold pretty much the entire first batch that priority is on production not promotion.

Serious questions: How strong is the Habitat when open? Can it take quite a bit of rocking or bouncing? Has it been tested to failure? I guess what I'm getting at is, could you like...get lucky in a Habitat and not worry about it breaking while you're in it?

I preordered. So I'll let you know in a couple of months.
