hi. im planning on building my own awning that will afford 270* of coverage. im in the very basic planning steps at this point, and was wondering what you all knowing fellers thought would be a good material.

im more concerned with uv protection, light deterance, and longevity as opposed to weight savings. also, water proof would be good.

thanx

heres the best paint skills i got!

sorry, the colors arent very bright

the black is your "basic roof rack"ish

the red is the swing out supports

the green is the proposed fabric layout.

now, in theory, the design will have a "cut" so that you lay it across the whole thing, then ratchet strap or something similar the front tips in to each other, effectively tightening the awning.

what do ya think?

my future in this will be on a suburban, though i invented it while looking at 4runners on this very site!

My awning is made of gray hypolon the stuff whitewater rafts are made of. Zero sun bleed through, obviously sheds water and is tough as nails. Down side is that it's heavy, might be expensive and depending on the color it can get hot to touch but provides excellent shade.

i think that may be a little heavier than id like. my original idea leaned toward hunting tent style canvas.

but a great idea non the less. thanx

this will be huge. prolly 8-10 feet out from a fullsize suburban, all the way around the back

Repurposing material

Has anyone used old sails? Here in San Diego I frequently find old sails for pretty much free, but hadn't had much use for them. They are usually pretty worn out for their intended purpose, but, even if they are torn, there is probably enough material for a small to mid-sized awning. I might try to make one for a spring project when I get back to SD.

That Sunbrella stuff is nice, but pretty pricey (atleast for my budget).

They sell Sunbrella, not sure about price comparison, but they also have quite a selection of notions and hardware.
