Awning poles

I picked up a piece of Military canvas to use as an awning, i need a few poles that are stouter than what i'v been using in the past which are the cheap thin steel ones. What are you using?

I'm also considering making a set and would want them adjustable from ~5' to 7' or so but i'm not sure how to go about it. Any ideas?

The awning will be 8'x10' IIRC.

I found these available from Kelty. Anyone have them and are they sturdy?

Thanks for the comments regarding your experience with these, Cabrito!

No problem!
As you can tell I am a huge fan of these ones because of how high they go and because of how they work. I will admit that I was a little dubious of the moving parts at first. You don't have to adjust your guy lines - just pull the pole up to tighten the guy lines if they develop slack.

I have those and they are quite sturdy. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

That Kelty adjustable is good pole for this purpose. Pricier than many others, but worth it. It's a nice balance between length and compactness, sturdy without being too heavy. The adjustibility is useful at times, and so far I have not had any problems with the mechanism.

In the attached picture, I am using one of these Kelty poles as the rear tarp support (at its shortest length). The front support is an 8' pole that came with another tarp.

Go on ebay and look for "prism pole" Its a surveyor's tool, aluminum or carbon fiber, they extend from 5' to 12', reasonable weight althreaded insert on top...perfect.

I think i will get a set of these. Recommendation from you and paulj is verification enough.

If these prove to come up short i'll take another look at fabbing up something.

Thanks.

Took a look, expensive stuff for support poles. Thanks for the idea though.

not too bad if you buy an aftermarket one like this, but everyone has a different break point :) It's certainly not $40 though.
