Awning: Which side? Does it matter.

I am probably over thinking this. I want to put my ARB 2500 awning on my truck cap when not being used on our slide-in camper. I already have fishing rod racks on the passenger side (I can move them = effort). Is there a preferred side? I'm in the US. Will I care that it is on the driver side? It will clear all doors.

If the majority of your camping is going to be in the wilderness, it doesn't matter. If it's going to be in parks with developed campsites and pay campgrounds, then it should be on the passenger's side, curb side, or patio side. The driver's side or street side, is also referred to as the service or utility side on RVs because that's where all of the hookups are installed. This keeps the party away from the sewer! :)

Most campsites with hookups are designed this way also. Of course, a vehicle like yours is small enough to pull in anyway and still fit just fine.

Any way you could mount it above or below the rod holders, so you don't have to move them, perhaps?

I agree with the above, it doesn't *really* matter in the wilderness, but at a camp-site having it on the curb side would be slightly more convenient. It would also open up more potential opportunities for use being on the curb side.

I just drilled the rack uprights on my van so I can mount mine on either side. For us the bare awning is better on the passenger side, but if we're using the awning room it's better on the driver side as the doors don't jive well.

I have also thought passenger side was best. If you are ever stranded on the side of the road, it can be deployed for shade until help arrives. If mounted on the driver side you would not be able to deploy it into traffic.

I did a lot of thinking on this when I just redid my setup. Like Bretthn said, I picked passenger, for similar reasons - picnic, roadside primitive camp, etc. also, since my awning is a 270, for practical reasons I don't have to look at it since it extends forward beyond the roofline into view. Can't see it from the drivers seat!

I like the P/S . I can pull over and deploy the awning on the road. My tire carrier open to the D/S so I can get to the fridge. Lastly , I have a table rail on the P/S that is covered by the awning.
