Awning Without a Roof Rack?

I am leaning towards jettisoning the roof rack from my FJ60 because I do not use it for hauling cargo.

This decision is complicated by the fact I'd like to be able to hang an awning on the vehicle.

What options are there for attaching an awning to a vehicle without a roof rack?

Sierra Trading Post still has the Kelty Carport in stock, at about $150 with coupon. All you need to make that work are roof rails, and you could probably easily rig something up even without.

Since you want to take the rack off, you'll still have its mounting bolts / locations. Mount some D-rings or some other useful attachment points in those locations. Then you can attach many awning solutions with hooks, cords, fiberglass rods whatever. Some kind of bolt with a quick-release attachment point on its head.
