Figured I'd bring this thread back up again as it will soon be time to do a little more work on the 4runner. Mostly maintenance issues, but a few minor mods to come and a set of new tires as well.
I've got a laundry list of stuff that needs fixin' :
-rear axle seals
-cv-shaft boots
-valve cover gaskets
-new timing belt
-driver side door handle inoperable
As such I've got a few questions for the 3rd gen guru's
1. When replacing the rear axle seals is it advisable to go ahead and replace the inner seal, outer seal and bearing? (I'm very familiar with ford 9" axles, but have never been in a yota axle)
2. CV shafts, I've run my pass. side with a torn boot long enough I think I should just replace it. I don't really feel like spending the coin on new shafts from toyota right not, are the 'new' shafts from say Autozone or NAPA worth the money or should they be avoided? Should I go ahead and get new shafts for both sides and install the high angle boots from All-pro? (I'm running 880/890 OME coils)
3. Any good links/write ups about the timing belt replacement. I'm very mechanically inclined, but like to look at some pics and info before diving into a job.
4. Anyone had their door panels off to access the handle/lock mechanisms? I guess once you remove the fasteners you just have to firmly pry them off but I don't want to break the panel, suggestions?
Aside from that, I need a new set of tires. I wore out the 235/85R16's I had on it so I put a set of 265/75R16 Firestone Transforce AT's on it. They were free and had 80% tread so I thought what the heck. Well, the traction is terrible, they make the thing ride like a log truck, and for whatever reasons it wanders a lot more now. I think I'll stick with the 265/75R16's as I like the stance, but might look for something less than load range E next time, lol. Ultimately I'd like a set of BFG AT's to go on it but I'm also open to suggestions for other 'semi-aggressive' all-terrain tires.
Thanks for the input, I'll try to throw some pics up in the near future since I know everyone likes pics.
