J-man, sounds good, though we might be south of there at that point.. we'll see! what are you driving? The sub is diesel, and it's getting 20-22mpg now, so we'll see what happens with the gear on the roof... call me optimistic!

OK if it is a diesel then yes, your mileage will be better.

Boy, am I going to miss KPIG. Damn fine model of what a radio station should be.
Updates are going to start happening a lot more on whereeaglesdare.org.
I just made one, actually.
Efuentes, I will certainly be PMing you about a spot to camp for a night. The ferry to topolobampo is a part of our plan, for sure. Thsnk you very much for your kind offer; I'll have some Pacifico's in the fridge for you.
We've taken J-man's advice and are bringing one brand new spare, a compressor, and a good repair kit instead of two spares.
I guess this is about it. We'll need to move this thread to In Progress in about a week!!!!! YAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

If i could chime in here.

Do you have the 5.7 350 in that pig? Then your gas mileage down there might be closer to the 9-12 mpg area. The reason I say this is the roads down yonder are windy and at times pretty rough. You might use the 4x4 a bit more. Plus you have a pretty heavy load. In addition, with a heavy load up top you might see the fuel needle fall a bit faster. I drive a 93 blazer with the 350. When I was driving back and forth from PHX-PVR I was dipping down into the single digits. I was easy on the gas, realitivly light loads but the stop and go traffic, slow moving trucks that slowed traffic, mountainous roads had an impact. In PHX, Im lucky to get 14-15. My rig is in good condition too.

By the way, nice suburban. Savage rack!

have a good trip. Getting thru Northern Mexico may be the hardest part of your trip!!!

It's the 6.2L diesel. I don't believe they offered the 5.7 in this model, but I don't know. Regardless, I know that with the heavy load and the wind resistance our mileage won't be what it is right now, and I'm ready for it. This truck has one purpose, which is to run, and if she runs, I'll keep feeding her.
J-man, I hope to see you down there, I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. As we're in this for fishing as well as surfing (and also simply seeing) we'll be on the cortez side a good bit...
Thanks again for all of the helpful insight.

Hi,
Can we have a moderator please move this one to in progress? We've just finished our first driving day; from santa cruz to camarillo CA, to visit family for the holidays. We'll be here for a few days, then to San Diego, then on to the real thing. Our first month will be spent in Baja...
Please see http://whereeaglesdare.org/ for more info and more frequent updates. Thanks again to all for the help and resources. Cheers

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
congrats. Perfect vehicle in my opinion, some buddies did the same thing in a gas one eons ago, just a tank/machine. Congrats too, we fell in love with Cerritos also. I'd have just camped there the day you backed into the tree :) Funny thing about La Paz is we had a pretty good time other then getting hosed by our hotel. Off the shore line gets a little crappy/industrial but we found we liked it a lot... Just up from the ferry is a killer beach who's name I forget but just awesome (photo below)...

You'll really dig Puerto Escondito when you get down there if you haven't been. Unreally & that whole coast as well. I hear there is some stuff going down in Oaxaca city recently but what a place too (and the drive and the mountains)... You can get killer "organic" coffee for next to nothing, pay two or three times what those guys make anyway as they (and their coffee prices) are so poor they can't even afford chemicals or the organic certification...

4cruzer, when you get back I'd love to hear about your experiences with the ferry. People always ask me about my experience (back in 2005), but my wife and I just bumbled through the process so we don't have any real info to share.

The Punta Las Pilitas area is where we once camped -- pretty much as far north as you can go on the peninsula north of La Paz. Beautiful & secluded. (GPS: 24.3510, -110.2892)

Sorry dont mean to thread hijack but wouldnt happen to be Tres Alijandros would it? Hitch hiked in there a couple years ago and got some killer surf. Loved that place.
