Baroud Grand Raid XXL - Spare Tire on Roof?

I am hoping to get feedback from Baroud users who store their spare tire on the roof of the tent. I noticed a video posted by the US distributor where the spare tire is mounted on the roof:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd9Yz-B3cQg&list=WL&index=49

I can't find any specs on the James Baroud website with info on the max weight for storing stuff on the stuff..... or specs on the strut capacity. The spare tire for my Land Rover Discovery is mounted on the rear tire. I am hoping to move the spare tire to the top of the varound tent. This will free up room behind my rear door to mount jerry cans for fuel and water.

Can fellow Baroud owners share your experiences on moving the spare tire to the roof please? What tent do you have? Does it adversely affect your ability to open and close the tent?

Thanks!

There is no way knowing if its only the tire or the wheel with the tire.

I have seen pictures of just the tire up there online without the wheel..

Hello,

The video you speak of was from James Baroud Europe, the Manufacturer of the tents.

The weight capacity is 60 lbs on top of the tent. Also if you want to put the spare on top of the tent it would have to be without the wheel. At James Baroud USA we recommend using the storage area for other items, as a tire and wheel combo will exceed the 60 lbs. weight capacity.

I hope this helps.

I doubt you will find any specs for allowed weight on the roof of a roof tent. It is a liability issue, these are now consumer products. For example, the Maggiolina Extreme is designed to carry a lot of weight on the roof but is rated at something like 30 pounds, which sounds pretty silly. The reason is the sport bars supporting the tent are rated at 165 pounds, this applies to both Thule and Yakima. So if your roof tent weighs 125 pounds and the bars themselves weigh 15 pounds, that only leaves you 25 pounds until you hit the magic number.

Thule bars are rated at 100 Kg in Europe and same bars are downrated to 165 pounds here in the US. That being said, the designers of these roof tents are aiming for expedition use rather than consumer use. Because this equipment fall into the hands of consumers, the manufacturers have to take this into account and downrate everything. There will be some idiot that will load a 100 pound tire on his roof tent because it look cool and roll his rig. A sharp attorney will see this, lick his or her lips and put Baroud out of business.

On the practical side, load your heavy stuff low, light stuff high and keep your center of gravity low for safety and better handling. You will have to carry extreme loads on your tent at times, that is what they are built for, but only when needed and by those that are skilled.

This doesn't necessarily address your specific issue with the spare tire, but I can tell you that Baroud makes a luggage bag that fits exactly in the wheel cutout. I originally didn't want to lay out the $$$ for just a storage bag, but it is cut perfectly for the space and has integrated straps. My wife got it for me for a gift. It has been really useful. We don't put anything heavy up there - things like down jackets, pillows, kids large plastic toys, etc. It helps free up some room in the vehicle.

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. As well as pointing out the video shows the tire only, and it is not a rim/tire combo.

I have a BajaRack which I modified to fit the Baroud tent. Weight capacity would be sufficient. My concern is whether the Baroud struts can support the rim/tire combo. I am looking at about 70+ lbs. Now, after a second thought with your comment, it is definitely not a good idea to place it on the top of the Baroud tent.

I will be looking into doing a bumper-mounted (swing out type) carrier for the spare tire and jerry cans. This will keep the c.g. down.
