Bear Cannister

the only experience I have of the Bear canister is the ones provided at during my Big Bend Expedition. The bear canisters were required for any food or perishable belonging during camp. The canisters were hard mounted to the designated camp sites (as seen below) and were seemingly bomb proof. We used them for trash and perishable storage, while in camp. and left the remaining perishables in the Engels with out a problem.

The bear box is the the tan box in the left hand side...

got the BV400 bear vault today, one day after I ordered it! so, do I need to put freeze dried packed foods and other wrapped foods in the bear canister or just "smelly" foods, toothpaste, gum, etc.? what if I wanted to take bacon and eggs in an icechest? do I need another bear canister to put perishables in an ice chest?

Freeze Dried food goes in the bear canister too. Even toothpaste and other tolilet kit items that might attract attention. You don't have much choice on the perishables. Just protect your ice chest as best you can.

I used to rent one for a couple bucks per day. The last several times I went backpacking, we used my buddies. They were the older, heavier ones however.

How thick is the material on those Bearvaults?

And BTW, everything is smelly to a bear. They smell way better than a bloodhound can.

REI rents them. And last year when I checked with the USFS the Bear Vaults were not rated as highly as the Backpackers Cache...at least the earlier models of the BV due to bears being able to open them on occasion.

True, I had one of the early models that with the flakey lids. They sent me two replacement lids when the upgraded design came out. All good now.
