bed mounted spare

I found this at princess auto. I think it is meant for a trailer spare but am thinking about picking it up to use in the bed of my truck. Any input? Kind or worried that it looks a little flimsy. May just make my own, would probably cost the same amount

For certain activities they're handy, but bed mounted spares tend to suck up lots of territory in my experience. I try not to carry the spares in the bed, or on the roof

The most the rig will really see is a 2-3 day trip and my truck is only a reg cab. I have a tool box mounted at the front for all my gear (plus probably room for at least 2 big rubbermaid containers) and then the spare. I plan on mounting a gas can on one side and water on the other, and if worst comes to worst on top of the spare.

Although, if you have any other ideas for a cheap spare tire mount that wont take up my hitch (recovery point) I'm all ears.

I have my spare mounted vertical on in the bed of my truck and it takes almost no bed space. I mounted on the left side of the bed so it doesn't block my view out the back window.

I went to the hardware store and bought a bunch of stuff to bolt it down. However after looking, measuring, debating, I decided to hold off. I already ordered a tailgate net, and spare tire cover to hide my ugly full size street spare on 16" rim (since I can't find a 17" spare rim for the matching spare tire). I am just going to use a heavy duty ratchet strap and tie it down right at the back of the bed. Worst comes to worst when I need the room I'll slap it up against the side of the bed like MCMs pic above.

Exactly what I did, and in the same place for the same reason. Mine is slightly angled to clear the shell.

(I had the grille out for some work when that impromptu trip came up. Threw some camping bits in the truck and blazed a trail up 395.)

Those Fabtech mounts you posted are great but the problem is that they will eventually warp your bed as the baseplate is small and only held in with 2 bolts. Had it and saw it happen on my truck and a couple others. Mounting on the side of the bed can be a good option if you aren't romping your truck hard. If you are going to mount it flat in the bed, find a bed crossmember and mount through that.

I was actually unable to find a shop in Canada or within a few hour drive of the US that has it. I have since come up with a cheaper solution that is just as effective.

Eventually I would like to get one of the fancy swing out tailgates that has the spare on it but this will do for now.

I wouldn’t advocate getting rid of the tailgate unless it was damaged. My tailgate has some dents, but I’m to addicted to the bed extender.

Mines damaged beyond use. I'm just going to get one of the nets for now since 99% time I have nothing in the back aside from my toolbox. And yes, those tiregate's are damn nice, also cost a ton up here.

The reception isn't as good in the cab. I tried it on the dash everywhere and in the back windows and it still does the best outside of the truck. On the tiregate was a good location for it so it wouldn't get in the way.

I drive ALOT and like using the tracking feature so that's always going but as soon as I start my hike or paddle, it goes along with me.

Does anyone make a mount hat holds the tire vertically? I was thinking of mounting the spare in my flatbed and would like it lengthwise behind the cab.

There is a whole lot of structure under and in my bed that you really can't see in that pic. For the reason that you bring up.
