bed problems

ok i have been kicking around the idea of modifying my bed since i really designed it with a lack of storage space. i have 12cf of stprage and no matter how i put stuff in it, its not enough room for all the necessities. SO i have been kicking around ideas on google sketchup (awsome program btw) and i have decided to raise the bed height up about 8-10 inches. so i will have truck boxes on either side and then make a framework ro put the tent on the roof. NOW i cannot decide between a magnolia hord case tent or an ezi awn. i know the hardsides rattle but i will never hear it over the noise of the truck the ezi awn will be good but i really like the idea of just having a pop up tent. i know its a 4'x6' foot print but i think it will serve my purposes well.

now here is my question, is it cost effective. i cannot find prices anywhere for the magnolias. anyone got any ideas on that?

my buddy paid about 3000cad for his blue mag. tent, with the winter insulation thingy that clips around. it´s not cheap! and i personally find it small inside...

im still on the fence abiut the tent, it probably wont happen this summer, but i at least want to get the bed to a better position, expeditionwise anyway. i will start a thread this summer as i work on it.

i like your pics and i know the measurements of the tent but thats not really the problem.

AH HA!! i found my problem, my measurements were wrong, i kept trying to figure out volume in cubic feet with wrong measurements. the bed is actually 4.5' wide from side to side, and the interior of the bed is actually 3'W X 6'L X 1'H, so i have 18cf of storage space not 12 as originally thoguht.

so the distance before the angle on the back is actually 4'4"L so that give me a place of 4'6" x 4'4" it should just barely clear. however i still think i should make the storage bins on the wings about 8" high with doors, for parts and whatnot.

now the next problem; if i put the tent right on top, how do i access the front of the bed? its going to make a kind of long tunnel, so unless i want to unpack everything infront of it to get to whatever is back there, what can i do?

any ideas?

ok so i changed my mind again, im going to stick with my currnet plan but i had to deal with that tunnel problem. BUT i think i have a solution, i have a couple drawer sliders that i can mount a large shelf that will slide from the front of the bed to the back thus allowing me to get to the stuff way up in the front of the bed. now i just have to figure out the measurements.

the back will be a chuck box, it can come out and be put on a table which will hang under the cover, lightweight and highly mobile.

the stove and all my cooking gear will be in the chuck box, my clothes and stuff will be on the bed drawer since they wont have to be accessable but when we are stopped.

the truck parts and tools and what not will be stored in the boxes on the wings, long enough to put driveshafts and axels in. on one side with oil and things, the oppisite side of the truck can be tools and other gear.

camera gear can fit behind the cab inside a cargo net, coats tripods, camera cases and a few other things.

electronics can hang from the celing via a jeep like overhead box.

hilift, fuel, and spare tire can be put on the rear bumper.

what do you guys think?

is there a way totake a pic of my idea from google sketchup?
