How about a softtopper? I don't miss having a toolbox with my campershell anymore after building some organization into the bed. In fact I really like having a shelf right behind my cab, and storage boxes along the sides of the bed. I'm 26, so not much older than you, and after having a campershell for awhile I would rather have the shell than 4wd, believe it or not. I've camped out of the back of my truck many times in many different places and it is really nice to just park, crawl in the back and sleep.
I wouldn't sweat the 2wd, I rarely, if ever, shift my truck into 4 unless there is snow or mud. Otherwise I just hit it in 2wd. I have found that clearance and gearing is much more important than 4wd. There are many times I would much rather have a smaller truck so I think the truck you have rocks. Reg cab, short bed, 2wd(simplicity), and in good shape. That is about all you need to go to 95% of the places I would want to go. If you really want some capability get a locker or lsd, and add on some prerunner stuff. But you don't need anything more than what you have to go plenty of places. In my opinion it is the way you use a vehicle that is more important than the things it has. The desire to go somewhere and following through with that desire is the most important part, and using what you have is the simplest, most direct way to get out there.
