Best cooler for a 3 week trip?

Actually I myself, and seen lots of users, put in an efficient cooler, rather than the compressor fridge they already own,

when trips are short and ice-civilization in easy reach.

I own half a dozen Yetis. If I'm going overnight in the truck, my fridge is coming along. Your comment doesn't make any sense. Ice takes more money, time, and space than using the fridge you own. You also have to double pack your food so it doesn't get wet as the ice melts. What a PITA. Give me one reason to use a cooler rather than the fridge on an overnight trip. Just one.

it's a preference choice, depends on the setup, but reasons could include

simplicity, no need to also install / bring along the solar / House bank

can be more compact

noise

risk of theft

I love having the 2 Fridges but I prefer to drag that cooler around than one of the fridges, It is so much lighter and easier on the body. Think I might buy another one at some point but maybe the next size down this time.

I'll wait for the prices for fridges to come down significantly before I will invest in one and if using more than one night, would also need to invest in solar and backup power (second battery or a lithium ion battery). Seems there is some healthy competition developing in the portable fridge market .

No you would not need a solar back up or another battery, I just run mine for over 6 days sitting in the lounge room and it still did not drop below 12v You should get over 3 days out of an 85A/h Battery and then some.

They won't come down they have had 3 prices rises in the past 2 years.

Why is your house battery not permanently installed? Regardless, plenty of people run their fridges on the starting battery.

A fridge is significantly more compact than a cooler that carries the same amount of food since you don't need ice.

The fridge is quieter than the central AC in my house.

A high end cooler is probably more at risk of theft than a fridge.

A cooler works better for day trips. Actual camping...the fridge is the winner.

I've been using a $10 garage sale Kooltron cooler. I bought it cuz it was $10 but it keeps food cold forever.
Even tho I unplug it at night. I'll never use ice again.

I did find my arb for 500,00$ can with the cover almost new. So what 350,00 @ 375,00 us.

I k ow costco canada as a model that is fridge and frezzer different compatment that looks very interesting and cheper and you get the costco warranty. You could almost use it for 3 months and return it after your trip no questions ask.

But he is looking for a cooler. ;)

most modern coolers will work

the YETI was the original multi-day solution butt there are A LOT of equally good quality clones out there now

i use a 2-cooler system that works quite well in extreme heat conditions(South Texas in June, West Texas in August)

one cooler(usually my YETI) keeps stuff that wont need accessing more than once daily(early morning organizing) along w/ extra ice

the 2nd cooler(most often an IGLOO) is for stuff like liquids(less expensive and other easily replaced items) that will be needed several times/day

the extra ice in #1 gets shared w/ #2 each day when it gets opened

the YETI's are quite heavy as are the clones so i like 2 smaller coolers better than one large one

this method was learned from some sailors who do some extreme condition cruising

the YETI was $229 to my door and the IGLOO was $40 + tax

$269 ± would be one helluva deal for a refrigerator/freezer

the OP did not ask about an electric unit

i simply shared how i manage in extreme heat w/ ice chests(answering the OP's original Q)

I tried to buy some of those yeti coolers and you would not believe the price they charge in the UK for them and they don't import the Peli Coolers any more. Back in OZ you have way more choices than ya do here.

The Pelican cooler I bought in 2015 was $250 and is an excellent cooler. I would recommend the same to the OP, but his mind is probably swirling over the alternatives.

Actual camping...the fridge is the winner.

? Actual Camping. ?

I must have a really skewed view on how "actual camping" is defined. I'm pretty sure it doesn't involve a refrigerator or a cooler.

Sorry for the unproductive thought but this thread already got detoured several posts ago.
