What do you have now? Just get the fam out and have fun, that is cheap. Now to answer your question try these, all used of coarse. and for $9k you most likely will have to do some work on them.
Ford e350 4x4
21 foot RV (good luck finding 4x4 but they are out there).
Toyota Sequoia, LC100, LC200, and pull a trailer.
Full size crew cab pickup with bench seats and a slide in camper and a chase vehicle, like a klr, gs, or dr. could be fun for you not being in the truck. Haha.
Nissan Armada
warning more than $9k
I say go with the RV you don't need 4x4, or just tow some crew cab SxS (rhino, ranger, razor, ect.) believe me you don’t need 4x4

Just getting past the touron season up here, I see RVs in the most random places all summer, but they are mostly rentals. Funny thing is the Manns, Moggs and other large euro 4x4 campers are never far from the tarmac.

i have a 89 trooper and a 91 chevy 1500 4x4 but the chevy has a hard time towing. i was thinking of just bulid the chevy for expedition but keep thinking i want something newer. i want a 7.3 excursion and i been on the lookout for a 2500 suburban with no luck. all the 7.3s are way more then 9k.

Since you are American - either a 'Burb or Expedition. There are many parts for 'Burbs, even in the boonies should you break down. The frame and body are designed to last 500K, and if you have a 350 ci - engine parts are plentiful. Now, as a Ford Guy, that pains me. But having owned one, they are great wagons with tons of space and the ability with the 3rd row to give everyone their personal zones - think family bliss on long road trips - words from a road warrior!

As an example, with my burb, we had 8 in the vehicle from Phoenix to Long Beach (8 hours) and nary a problem.

I cannot speak for the Expedition, but if it is like my F250, I would recommend as well.

I would suggest a Suburban. For $9k you could probably get a pretty cherry one, and an HD 2500 version is available. Well recommended, especially with a diesel or 350. (454 is boss if you don't mind awful mileage)

We have a family of six and we fit nicely in our 02 sequoia. Love it. And they can be had in your price range. You can look into a cargo bag or rocket box for more storage when needed. We have a trailer so not as much of an issue for us, but if we had to fit all the gear inside it would get interesting quickly...

I have a v10 excursion gasser. Pleanty of room, bad gas mileage not going with diesel in my case. Beware of rust on lower parts of the doors

I'm a fan of my crew cab short bed superduty. I picked up mine with 187k still going strong $4200 that leaves you a but for a.slide in camper. Plus you have a usable rig the rest of the time.

Sitting 3-across front and rear, though? Two people per row is preferable on a long trip, IMO.

I don't often have more than wife pug and me. My brother in law carries 6 and even 8 at times in his 96 crew cab 5 hours to show low
