Absolutely nothing wrong with the 1/2 PEX available from Lowes/Home Depot etc. Connectors available are usually Appollo PEX or Sharkbite (meaning Sharkbite brand, still crimp style connectors). I have plumbed lots of rigs with these and never had a failure or a leak, though I have heard of a few leaks.
The advantage of these is that they are readily available and cheap (probably not the case with another style/brand) and that anyone can build or rebuild an entire system with one $25 pair of crimping pliers and a cheap pair of tube cutting pliers. I carry a kit in my rig which takes up no space. It includes a handful of crimps, a splice fitting and a couple of elbows, butts, etc. and a couple small sections of tubing.
Very simple, cheap and reliable and very easy to repair yourself.
