I pieced together my recovery kits. I looked at prepackaged kits and ultimately figured building my own made more sense and was more fun. For my '06 Jeep with 9.5k winch I initially I started out with one 5 ton shackle, a tree strap, a tow strap, a recovery strap, a shovel, and a set of leather gloves. While in AK I used various pieces a few times to pull myself out of snow, up snow banks, etc. Every time I got stuck it was due to stupidity on my part. However, with on board gear and on one occasion a call to my wife to bring her Jeep for an anchor I got myself out.
I sold the rubicon and got a '10 Dodge power wagon. Of course a bigger vehicle and bigger winch (12k) requires bigger gear. Over time I added a larger recovery strap, a snatch block, a receiver mounted shackle, another shackle, and an ax. I only had occasion to use the gear a couple of times, but I'm glad I had it. The kit is all fairly compact, mostly stores in a warn bag in the bed toolbox, or attached to the toolbox (shovel and ax) and I feel this kit will get me out of most jams. I also carry two heavy rubber chock blocks that have served well when using my vehicle or another vehicle as an anchor.
For my M35A2 2.5 ton truck my recovery gear consists of a 10k PTO winch, a big bubba rope, 2 large snatch blocks, a large strap, four 9.5ton shackles, an ax, a mattock, and a shovel. I haven't had an occasion to use any of it, but it's ready.
