Best rooftop cargo system?

Looking for something to go on top of our 4Runner trail edition. Anybody have any recommendations. We have 11 month old and another on the way and need all the room we can get

Those Yakima or Thule boxes are tempting, but they are spendy. Weatherproof and lockable. Sure it looks cool to mount stuff on a rack, but I don't like the idea of mounting a forcible entry tool (shovel/axe/etc) to the outside of my truck. Might find a deal on CL.

Definitely check Craigslist if you're interested in one of these. Around here, you can often score a slightly beat-up Thule or Yakima for $100-200. If you have a full-size truck, the skinny ones will fit side-by-side on a good set of rails.

pretty sure it's safe to carry guinea pigs on the roof though
