How big? A used Honda Transalp 650 should fit in the midrange. Might find a 650 BMW under $10K, but I'd take the Honda.

@tpsbossman,

That scrambler will easily do it.

There’s adventure in every motorcycle, don’t let anyone tell you it’s not the right bike, different bike, different adventure.

to answer the question…

The new transalp (easier to find than the original)

The KLR (its mid weight for sure)

The aprillia 660 ( second hand will be in budget)

BMW, f750-800gs (650’s are harder to find)

I’ve got both the Husqvarna Strada and Terra, both 650’s (BMW owned Husky at the time and they have the BMW engine with high performance head from factory) and plan to sell both this spring. The Terra was built for the TAT, which it did flawlessly, hence my post. Shoot me a pm if interested.

I think the Translap will be heavenly on the highways vs the KLR

Not much knowledge about the aprillia or BMW

Well, well what do you know, Murphy out to prove me wrong…

No affiliation but it turned up on my feed…

and yes Transalp would be a smidge better if you got trapped doing freeway.

Aprillia is solid rig plenty of people having good feed back

BMW variants are solid too, big following good support.

Jump on advrider, look up almost any bike and there will be a thread.

Want route suggestions, just ask on the forum.

TAT = Trans American Trail, google will explain in detail. EDIT, there’s entire maps/gps files you can get, load in your nav and follow for this route.

Second Edit, add the Yamaha T7 to your list.

I kinda want a wider seat not the Enduro type. Some more comfort !!!

Excellent info, then list narrows, T7, T660, F700-F850 and TA are still in play…

T7 and T660 have more enduro-esk seating positions, think “on” the bike as opposed to ”in” the bike. Seats and rider triangle are very rider dependent, yay test rides!

Vstrom 650/800. Took a group of neighbours and old friends on a tour of the northern part of the North Island 1000. 2 KLRs, KTM 890 adv, a just unwrapped new T7, and both a 650&800 Vstrom. With no hard offroad, definitely consider the Suzuki; comfort, easy ridding, range due to its economy riding under 40mph on soft roads, and reportly reliability. The new 800 feels lighter on gravel roads then the KTM, we all agreed.

I ride 90% offroad and rather want the T7, but with suspension upgrade (my 100K km upgraded KLR is better than a stock T7) and serious protection, the T7 is going to cost near 20K.

excellent suggestions, they would be just the ticket.

US second hand with farkles run $7500 to $8500 (miles depending) so in budget.

Thinking as a Canadian, T7s go fast from Dealerships and few used models, one I can find now is $11,000 cad and totaly stock.

I tour often with family on KTMs and neighbours/son in law Vstrom. The Zuki is the more comfortable soft road bike, but on many a trips find them unable to climb loose steep gravel hills; hills that I turned around on when riding a BMW GSA and a Versys 650 with 50/50 tires
