Ok so this has been in much debate with my family

The reason for the debate is my van im building in gun storage. I plann to travel with at least 4 rifels and 3-6 pistols depending on what the Gf brings.

So i want to build a cabent in the van to hold them

Dad says lat them down on the side
uncel says best way would be upright {standing on the but}

I had planed to carrie them in foam horizontal upright scope up strped down to a foam coverd wood base

It really doesn't matter which orientation you carry them in. The main issues for me would be A) keeping them protected from damage, B) Keeping them from prying eyes should you be parked in a populated area, and C) Should those prying eyes decide to break into your vehicle, keeping them from being stolen.

Now of course if you are going to be in the middle of nowhere (like much of Wyoming) B & C are probably less important, but I would still factor those into your plans.

If you decide to set them up on their buttstocks, the cabinet might look more like a gun cabinet than just random storage. For this reason I would choose to lay them down. Long guns are typically most stable upside down like this picture:

I have seen some pretty cool under-seat gun cabinets that hid the guns well, protected them, and did not take up precious space.

the guns in question can be stood up in a closet or layed down in the bottom or under the bed

So either way they will be locked

my biggest worrie is supporting them while in motion on rough roads and situations. I carried in the back window for years up side down straped to a gun rack. This is however not sucure and verry hard to hide from prying eyes. upside down may be hard laying down to support them

Some wood with some U-cuts lined with felt is a good way to go. If you make them narrow enough they will cradle the stock and the barrel and won't allow them to rock back and forth too much.

Either works, depends what the rest of the seat and storage layout is. One thing about vertical in most vans is you can use the curve of the outer wall to your advantage--a vertical cabinet door and you just happen to have the widest portion right at the action and scope and taper to almost nothing at the muzzle.

my van is an old construction van. so the inside is wide open it will eventuly have a bed and cabnet/closet on the drivers side.

I carry mine in a carpet lined drawer system in the back of the LC. They will not fall over if they are laying down.

What about legal issues while we are talking gun storage?

Don't they have to be in a locked container separate from the ammo? At least in CA.

I guess so. It's the exception not the rule. Sad really.

As far as I know most states don't require you separate the gun and ammo, especially long guns. Having the guns in a locked cabinet is a good way to be sure and it should cover you in pretty much every state.

California has a lot of stupid gun laws, but that is not one yet. The guns can't be loaded, but the magazines can be loaded and in the same locked container, as long as they are not in the guns. I would still keep them separate if you are concerned. Also, there are so many crazy gun laws in California that most LEOs don't understand most of them.

Here is a great site. http://calguns.net/calgunforum/index.php

When my grandfather was still alive he had a rack in his camper for his rifle. Under the locking bed he had mounted a couple of blocks of wood with U cuts in them. The openings had some of that adhesive foam weatherstripping to cushion the rifle and then he had Velcro straps mounted to the tops that he strapped the rifle into the cradle with. He used that setup successfully for years while he traveled around the US.
