BFG KM2

Following from my post on Dakar rims, I now have a set on its way over, and was thinking of keeping my XZL tyres, however a friend who's got a 110 SW, got the BFH fitted, would these suit the 130, and more so do I need 265/75R.

What do you mean by "suit"? Are you worried about looks or performance? If performance, in what type of terrain?

As to size, that is another open question... What rims do you have?

The size is up to you. They do make them in 235/85/16 which is roughly the same size as 7.50x16.

Great off road tire with very good on road manners. Very, very good in both the mud and on rocks. Of course don't expect to get 100,000 miles out of the tires but they will have decent life to them.

If you find yourself in situations with mud that the XZLs aren't performing well in, then the BFG KM2 would be a great alternative.

I see these type of quote often and I wonder if the posters actually have been out off road and compared performance side by side against other brands.

Mud performance is OK and on par with other similar streetable "mud" tires. It is certainly not "very, very good". You need proper off road tires for that. Performance is other area is decent and they are very robust, which is quite important. They are not great in ice and snow, but I doubt that is a concern for the OP.

Again, it comes down to what terrain you want to operate in and the rims. The OP is in Australia and may be doing a lot of work on soft sand. If that were the case a 235/85 BFG MT would not be my choice.

I believe Doug or someone had the 255 85 Km2s on their 127/130. Looked great, that's what I'm running on my D2 as well.

Hmmm, called out. Reckon I'll have to defend myself here.

Compared to Goodyear MT/Rk, the BFG blows it away in the mud. Same with the old KM and old MT/R. This observation comes from field observations (typically in the form of two highly similar Jeep Rubicons, just with different tires, for direct comparisons that is pretty close). Of course TSLs are better in the mud but they are pretty dismal on the road (I have a set of TSLs). This comes from personal experience as I have a set of TSLs. On dry rocks the MT/Rks perform well but here in my region, there are no dry rocks. Once again, the KM2s perform well once aired down on rocks, even when wet/covered with mud. I could go on but no use.

Been wheeling with my friend who has XZLs on his disco. In the thick stuff they do clog up which was surprising since they have such a wide lug pattern. My BFG KM2s cleared out better (once again, surprising).

Lastly I'd like to reference that I am referring to off roading in the southeastern part of the US. Mud is on everything, even the trees. That is just how it is. Hence why I say if you are dealing with a lot of mud, the BFG KM2s are a great choice. On road they aren't so bad. No clue in sand, snow, or ice. I've seen pictures of mud in Oz, but I don't know if that is what the OP does. Also Red90, I have no idea what the terrain is like in Calgary. If you have lots of mud, rocks, and mud covered rocks, the KM2 is a good streetable tire.

Im running 255/85s on my 90 and find them good in mud (clear well), on the street, in sand, on wet rocks etc. They are absolutely pants on ice but ok in the snow.

Mud experienced in Wales, Street all over Europe, sand in Morocco, Wet rocks in Croatia, Bosnia and Bulgaria, Ice in Arctic Norway and Snow in Arctic Finland (both in winter).

I love the 255s on my 90 and their narrow width means you don't get issues in (some) ruts caused by others.

If you want to keep things more standard though, 235s as mentioned above would be the way to go.

The reason I was looking at the bfg was I wanted a wider tyre than the xzl's , more so for looks yes, it's my mobile show room, but I also require a good off road tyre .

I spoke to my tyre man today and he said the km would be a bad choice as I do a lot of Tarmac road use, and the bfg, all terrain would suit better.

I might wait and see what the Dakar rims look like with the xzl's

As stated, the XZLs are horrible on tarmac.... What type of off road use?

I have run the old MT BFG on a 130 dc HCPU in Australia ,(back in UK now) and found them excellent , that was in 265/75 r16 They were much better in mud than the OE tyres , Mich 750r16 Extra load . I have 285/75r16 BFG MT (old pattern) on my 110 , and the 265/75r16 KM2 MT (new pattern) on a 90. The old pattern were better in snow , and achieved very high mileages . I had no problems (other than whine on the bitumen) operating in OZ on all types of terrain from sand to flint to mud , the new MT KM2 is supposed to be quieter, and seems to be , although my 90 isnt thequietest on road (300tdi) due lack of sound deaening in the cab . I work on the principle that the MT will give the best performance in mud , which is where you need it , on the bitumen you can adjust your driving to address any short comings , with an AT you cant do the opposite JMHO
