BFG KM2

I think I would like a little more of a wider stance, would the 255/70 suit my requirements? I think 85 would cause issues?

I spoke to my tyre man yesterday who said, the KMs would be a poor choice for more on road driving, and the AT would be better.

Another non 130 question

110 station wagon, with BFG 255/85 having slight problem with turn restriction is this a rim issues?

Compared to Goodyear MT/Rk, the BFG blows it away in the mud. Same with the old KM and old MT/R.

the KM2 is a good streetable tire.

You make some very good points and I have the same opinion of the MTR VS the KM2.

I also agree the KM2 is a great off road tire that allows you to drive on the street. But it is not a substitute for a true mud tire.

I work on the principle that the MT will give the best performance in mud , which is where you need it , on the bitumen you can adjust your driving to address any short comings , with an AT you cant do the opposite JMHO

Exactly.

I'm running km2 and have been for years. Very good street manners.

It's been said by others that the km2 is the best mud tire for street use, with the duratrac a close 2nd. However last time I checked the 'tracs weren't avail in the tall skinny sizes.

Not a fan of the BFG AT at all.

These are 255/85-16s on my 130, KM2s, and loved them for a general mix of everything except snow and ice- of which we have little. Note- front has +2" spring, rear stock double spring setup...

Also of interest- the BFG A/T is not available in the 255/85 size sadly.

Out of curiosity, what would you consider a true mud tire?

It seems like the only thing better would be a TSL or maybe a tractor tire...or a Bogger for that matter. TSL does bring a lot of win overall off road but is dismal on pavement.

SSR was actually just as quiet, great on the rocks, and very good in the mud- and not all that loud on tarmac. I did have some H-1 buddies that had issues with sidewalls on the SSRs however. Here is 35/10.50 SSR on a +2" D-90:

I have run first KM1's and then KM2's on my D1 for the past 8 years and have nothing but high praise for both. I do a lot of off roading in the Four Corners area in both mountain and desert terrain. They have been very durable (only ripped open one KM1 on a rock) and have given excellent traction in all the off road situations I have encountered in all seasons. The KM2's are by far the single most popular mud terrain tire being run in the Southwest on all makes of trucks. The KM2's are not great on snowy/icy pavement but then what MT tire is. The KM2's do just fine on dry pavement. I ran BFG KO's for years on a Ford Explorer I had before getting a D1. Good on road tires but don't compare at all to KM1/KM2 off road plus I thought the KO's did poorly in off road snow or mud as they clog up easily. The KO's are also very popular in the Four Corners area but not as popular as the KM2's. I don't have experience with anything other than BFG tires as that's all I have bought for many years but I am so completely satisfied with them that I would not buy anything else or change to anything else no matter what the price. Just my 2 cents.

What would the lowest tyre pressure you could run the 255/85/16 on Dakar rims.

At what stage do you have to add lift when fitting larger tyres?

Are the tyres hitting the hockey sticks on full lock , if yes then using either 130 rims or FC rims should help, as they are more offset , if the tyres hit the H?stiks then , it means you need to adjust your lock stops to just prevent contact .

Tyre size without lift, will also be affected a bit by rim , but 255/85 is about it , 285/75 will catch on mudguard extensions at first , but also on rear underwing on 110sw , may just clear on 130 HCPU , had no probs with 265/75 on 130 also 235/85.

if most onroad , and dry season usage , (plus they close a lot of the bush tracks when it rains ) then AT as he says HTSH

Pit Bull rocker
Swamper Irock Bogger TSL
Nitto Mud Grapler
BFG Krawler
Maxxis Trep?????? Something

In my opinion these are mud tires. Street use is not a priority. The reason we run Nittos is because they seem to be the best balance of Street usability and off road traction.

I see both of these in red label versions used more in rock crawling applications. My god they bring so much win. I've always thought a set of 35x12.50 Maxxis Treps in street compound would be awesome on my 109 (but I'm looking for at the 33x10.50x15 KM2 for my next set to put on my beadlocks). I don't hardly see any blue labels anymore now that the KM2 is out.

The pit bulls were very popular back in 2008 and 2009. Not seeing them a lot anymore on the trail. Very popular in the 39" crowd but Krawler Red Labels have become more available so throwing down the extra $$$ for those makes more sense. The Nittos seem to be an excellent compromise tire. What are their sidewalls like?

The TSL in 35" and under is probably the best off road tire available, if off road is all you are doing. They suck so much on the road. If I did more than like, 300 miles a year on those tires then I'd pull them off the beadlocks and go with the KM2s.

Sorry for the thread hijack...

Wow the sidewall on the Treps is great, I'm a pretty big fan of the Maxxis Creepy Crawler for a more agressive mud/somewhat street tire.

I see you are running a 130. I can't speak to the rims but I ran 285/75 Km2's on Wolf/130 steel wheels on my 130 for close to 40k. I regularly aired down to 12psi. I didn't go lower just because the 130 is so damn heavy. @ 40k miles the tires still had plenty of tread and I sold them to a buddy for $300 and they have changed hands twice since. They were the best combination tire I have run, although they got noisy once worn.

I now have street tires and designated off road rubber.
