I planned on leashing mine to the bumper or trailer with a long lead. Is this inhumane?

One thought on the "leashing to trailer" idea, if your dog is big enough (think 135 lb Alaskan Malamute) and he desides he would like to chase something then your trailer is GOING to follow him. Trust me on this. Porthos does not get tied to the trailer anymore.

As for what I do with Porthos, he either gets put on a a run that I set up or, if the weather is really bad then he goes in the back of the truck.

I've got two large dogs, 85 lbs Husky and 100 lbs or so Malamute. The Husky will sleep inside if we allow it, which we generally don't, but will also be content sleeping outside teathered with a sleeping pad. So he is usually tied to a tree near the camper or more often up in the bed of the truck. The Malamute refuses to sleep inside a tent, crate or dog house. She prefers the outside no matter what the conditions and won't sleep on a pad either. No matter how much snow we get I usually see a spot melted to the grass where she spent the night. The colder the better for her. While I love my dogs to me they are still dogs and are at the bottom of the family food chain. They spend about 70/30 time outside/inside and are conditioned to that and they enjoy that. Therefore when camping they just stay outside. We are not ones to let a dog sleep in the same bed as us whether camping or at home. Just the way I was raised and have always been. Yes I've taken some heat for that but I don't think there is anything wrong with our philosophy. It all comes down to what you/your dogs prefer and what your dogs can handle. If they are an inside dog keep them in an enclosed place with some warmth. If they are dogs like mine that can with stand and prefer the outside/elements then keep them outside.

Our dog is only about 40 pounds, but she has long legs and claws(even when they are freshly clipped) and I worry about her scratching up the inside of a very pricey RTT. She usually stays home when we take trips cause my mother in law doesn't want to be alone when we leave. My daughter has been begging for us to take her, so I'm working up a plan for a cargo barrier to keep her in back of my cruiser on top of the storage deck. Plenty of room for her and her mattress. And she'll only be a few feet away from us, so maybe she won't flip out. We'll be taking a short trip again soon, so maybe I'll try her out in the tent.

Bergger, I agree with you on you ideas for dogs of that size and type. When we had a cocker spaniel, he was always on the furniture and in the bed. He was a short dog and only around 35lbs. Our current dog is a boxer mix(a little smaller than pure boxer) and she has really long legs. She NEVER gets on the furniture or bed. One reason for that, she is really fond of sprawling out in the dirt rather than the patio. She always smells like dust. Big hearty dogs like huskies and malamutes, definitely outside.
