Big mods to my little Sankey

Hi all,

I've been lurking and admiring the work on here for a while. I've finally got into gear and used the inspiration for my own project.

I've got 2 Sankey widetracks which I use behind my 110. I'm not greedy but my second one came up locally for £120 (US$190ish) and was in better shape than my none too shabby original. It would have beeen rude to say no:wings:

I know wish I'd taken more "before" pics

So it was off to a friends engineering workshop for a body to be built. So far we have the outside shell. Once initial painting is done we will be fitting doors on side at front along with a side box on each side.
The rear doors will be twin "barn doors." The whole thing is demountable using the roof bars as an attachment point.

Cheers Fella,

That thread was one of my (many) inspirations. I went a slightly different route as I wanted the make the body demountable but have got one or two ideas from that one that may make an appearance later?!?

Been meaning to join Difflock for ages so I'll get around to it now, maybe even post this up on there too?

As for parts, got most stocked up but i'll definately be in touch for anything needed.

Definitely put this build up on Difflock - there's not enough trailer builds on there.

I made my top detachable too, as I wanted the trailer to be multi-purpose. The lid's made out of 5 bar ally chequer plate, mounted to a 1" square box section frame. It means two people can (...just!...) lift it off if not required.

This makes much better use of the trailer, I can use it to:

General usage - tip runs, wood collecting etc
Haul the motorbike(s)
Put a small quad in it (has a ramp tailgate)
Stick the lid on and go camping

I used box section, with captive nuts welded in place, to drop in to the box section corner posts. It's then secured in all 4 corners with 2 x M10 bolts per corner.

Keep us updated on the build!

Interesting Sankey build, great work.

I had a look at the Difflock thread that was sited as part of the inspiration for the build. The trailer that sparked build was an Adventure Trailer circa 2003. We used to import trailers from South Africa and this was one of the models.

The design was not well suited for conditions in North America as the side boxes were too low, too far forward, and stuck out too far. Unfortunately there were no protection bars around the side boxes and people ended up dinging them on rocks or scraping the bottoms of them.

It looks like you took care of that aspect in your design.
