Big O Bigfoot X/t

I'm needing new shoes on my Runner and have been runnign the gamit between new rims and tires (Can't do this because the Teflon Mojave's are on bo)

or just new tires

I saw these today in a 275/70-17 today and wanted to get onyones opinion.

from what I have heard, some people like them and some not. They seem to wear better from lighter vehicles, as most complaints I heard were from full size owners. complaints ere fast wear, and side wall strength.

I am a complete and total fan of the old style XTs. I would recommend them to everyone, wore like iron, soft enough for the rocks. The sidewalls even in D/E loads are flexible. This can be seen as either good or bad. The good is that they air down very well. I however have never blown a sidewall on XTs. I have easily 70k miles on the old XTs and are still in use!

The new XTs I have on my 80 and I like because they're a touch softer tread for slickrock grip, the lugs have a larger surface area than most MTs and thus grip IMO much better in sand, and the section width is consistently skinnier than expected. What I don't like about them is that the tread is softer and I have some chunking already where the old XTs didn't see a single chunk. They are also studdable which few tires are anymore and I love studs.

YMMV. Overall I would say average results on the new XTs: if you can get them for a good price by all means do. If however you can get your hands on the old tread and compound I would jump on them at a premium.

My perspective on Big O's is slightly tainted due to my background in hard core wheelin'.

I've have a jeeper buddy who was told not to come back to the local Big O due to the huge quantity of tires he destroyed. And, after he cause serious delays on our trial rides, we asked him to not join us unless he changed tire brands...

The sidewalls are very, very thin, and sliced up or got pinched on almost every trail run I did with him. One one particular trail known for it's sharp rocks (Judgement Day for those who know it), he had almost simultaneous flats in the first 200 yards. He had to borrow spares from other Jeeps to get out...

So, no, I certainly won't recommend them.

I worked there when I was in highschool and everything that carried the Big O name just seemed to be a lesser quality than the other possibly more costly tires available. I would pass and look at something else in the same price range.

Anyone have an update to these tires? I was at Big O in Conifer today and they owner priced them the exact same as a set of 255/85/16 BFG MT's. For the same $ I think BFG would be the way to go, but wanted to check here just in case.

BTW - I was going to go with the Cooper Discoverer tires in the 255/85 but I read a lot of bad press on the Aussie forums. Pretty colorful language describing just how bad they were. These reviews were from folks that either lived or worked in the outback. Tires saw constant abuse and could not handle it, according to our Australian counterparts.

Back in the late 70's / early 80's I wheeled the San Bernardino mtn fire roads in a Datsun pickup on Big O tires and had excellent results with them. With that in mind I shopped these new tires at my local Big O store. I ended up getting a set of 285/75R16 BFG AT's from the Big O dealer. But the same size tire in the Big O label was $30-40 more....

Just my two cents worth...

PS - Anyone in the San Diego area have a used 285/75R16 tire they would like to get rid of. I need a spare - already have a rim......

There are many here with more experience with BFG MT treads than I, even in your chosen size, 255/85. However I also have a set of them in 255/85. They were on my F350 for a bit but currently three of them are in use, two on my Chaser and one as an MT for the 4Runner and its Maxxis Bighorns in 255/85.

I like that the Big Os have sipes from the factory instead of none on the BFG, however I have had my BFGs/Maxxis siped by my Les Schwab tire dealer for added grip & cooling. Maybe the Big Os would be quieter, but I don't find the BFG MTs objectionably loud. Louder than Toyo MT but quieter than my Maxxis Bighorns.

I vote for the BFG in 255/85.

I just noticed in your signature that you have 235/85R16s BFG ATs. How have you liked those skinny tires on your Tacoma? I assume you replaced your stockers with the BFG ATs?

Love them a lot! They are light weight, tall, easy to balance etc. etc.

I am selling them only to gain some ground clearance for my limiting IFS. The BFG AT's wear like iron too - wish they made the AT in 255/85.... :Astrologist:

They are a good tire. I have ran then on a disco for years. The only issue I have with them is that in heavy clay mud they do not self clean that well and there is a weak spot between the tread and the side wall that if hit just right a 1/2" dia piece of wood will punchure this weak spot. I did like them for highway and light to medium trails but did not care for them that much for off or heavy trail driving.
