BJ74 Owners?

Mark - I may be able to help with some of those Canadian related questions until Gold Boy replies...

As far as I have ever seen, the 13BT never came directly into Canada. The Canadian spec BJ74 only came from Toyota with the 3B. However, there are LOTS of 13BT's around here and lots of parts available. There is a huge influx of RHD Cruisers being imported from Japan so availability of parts is easy. Also, the engine is essentially a turbo charged 3B so all the basic parts are the same and available from dealerships.

The 13BT is an excellent engine. I have driven a number of them and compared to the 3B the turbo charger makes a huge difference on the highway with basically no fuel mileage change. Matched with a 5 speed it's pretty much bulletproof. It's almost as good as a properly tuned and monitored AXT turbo added to the 3B (but they are a bit finicky).

Not sure about the 4.2 - it's not a diesel engine that I am familiar with. The 4.0 litre 12H-T is a nice engine. More torque on the highway for easier high-speed travel. Pretty quiet too. Trade off is much higher fuel consumption. My experience with them is only limited to a few drives, so that's about all I can say with confidence.

This site discusses imported Land Cruisers into Canada and might help you out with the engines and specs.

For the top off and doors, the doors are removed as part of the process. Just a couple of easy bolts if I remember correctly - easier than a 40 series.

A few questions if you don't mind:
1)13B-T diesel engine: Is this the same engine that was sold in Canadian BJ70 models ( I am wondering about parts and service in Canada)? What kind of real world fuel economy have you been getting. What is your opinon of the 13B-T v 4.2 NA (one of the available units I am looking at has the 4.2, fr and rr lockers and 24v warn winch)
2)Payload: "400 (250)kg" is it 400 or 250?
3)Were there any modifications required to the vehicle once it arrived in Canada, either due to gov't regs or practical issues?
4) If you remove the roof, what happens to the rear doors?

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark

#1. No not quite the same, the 3B(Canadian BJ70) was indirect injected non - turbo, but basically the same block.
#2. Payload - is a lot more than the stated 250kg not sure what Toyota means here.
#3. Head light lenses had to be changed. Everything else has the DOT/SAE stamp
#4. You have to buy a new set of doors or custom. Don't like moving the FRP top as the a/c is very good. And also I have been told the seals never reseat properly.

You can add me to the list though mine is very much in pieces at the moment. The axles are out in favor of a set of locking 60 series ones under a springover. The head is in the shop and the Garritt turbo is getting rebuilt. Body work is about half done.

I'll add some pics once it looks like something.

Just here...
Yes, this is an oldie but I just discovered the 74. Dimensionally, what is it similar too? Can the removable roof carry weight?

IIRC the FRP top is rated to carry about 400lbs. It's possible I don't RC though :sombrero:
