Sigh... Get home at 9.30 tonight and think "I know, I'll just install those rear brake rotors while I have some time!"

Holy crap! I had forgotten how hard it was to get to those things!!!!! I think I'll be waiting a few more days. Audi, here I come!

For those in need, the factory service manual can be found at http://www.landroverresource.com/range-rover/

What do you get when you combine two slow leaks and a small personal injury settlement due to the year old wreck of your irreplaceable Porsche 951?

New tires! As discussed in the 215 thread, I went with Geolandar AT/S 215/85-16 "Camel Trophy Size" pizza cutters. I am pretty happy with them - steering is much easier than with the wide disco-size 235's and the VC doesn't seem to be as bothered as it used to be. I think it's still dying, but I have perhaps put it off until warmer weather. Here's a quick poser pic, but for the entire series of before/afters at all three standard ride heights go tothis post

I have a sneaking suspicion the folks at Rover designed the brakes to punish anybody who waited too long to replace their pads. I admit, I haven't had to deal with inboard brakes in quite a while, but removing those nylocks while kneeling on the rotor with my head balanced on the garage floor was not my funnest moment.

In other words...

Rear brakes: Done.

Went with PBR Metal Masters because I've had good experiences in the past and they were on closeout for only $22 from RockAuto. Front brakes coming soon!

Just thought I'd resurrect with an update...

This RR is everything I have ever wanted in a truck - comfortable, capable, stable... My girl likes it so much we're shopping for a D1 for her, and my dad has the bug again and wants a P38. I'm chasing down a stumble, but I'm pretty sure I will be replacing a fuel filter to fix that.

Recent:
* License plate M PNGUIN
* 10 year old copilot
* new exhaust gaskets

Coming up:
* MSD ignition controller
* The aforementioned fuel filter
* Front brakes (finally)
* HID upgrade for the Hella driving lights (because I can)
* Air conditioner recharge (R12 is EXPENSIVE, jeez)
* Replace muffler with hole in it... though driving around sounding like a harley is kinda fun.

All in all, for the price I am very happy. I just broke 180k miles and it's running strong.

Nice looking truck. Also nice to find a fellow Land Rover owner and Expo member in the area. I am up in Felton, CA.

I am up on Fern Ridge a ways off of Zayante. I am originally from Boston but have been in the area for a little while and trying to settle in.

So there may have been a bit of a spending spree...

Muffler had a hole in it, so I picked up a Dynomax Ultraflow (it's designed for muscle cars - I'll have to post up a sound bite). 100% stainless steel, lifetime warranty, made in USA, 90 day "test-drive" from Dynomax, and it was under $50 shipped.

Speakers had a hole in them, so I am moving up: Alpine CDA-105 iPod capable receiver, wiring harness to hook it up to the factory A/D/S amp(s), Clarion speakers and an Elemental Designs mini-subwoofer to replace the factory DVC sub.

A/C is in the process of being re-happified.

It was sputtering so bad I thought I had a clogged fuel filter - replaced the cap and rotor and it's purring. Until I install the aforementioned muffler this weekend, at which point it will growl.

Coming next - a 400w inverter replacing the factory CD changer.

This is what happens when you give student loans to a car nut. (It was either this or the 1965 Chevelle with a fuel-injected LT1 swap).....

Some notes to get us caught up on the existing additions:
* STI 8mm plug wires
Cheaper than Magnecor, made in the USA, and they feel very nice. I've had them on for about 9,000 miles and I am very happy with them.

* DynoMax Ultraflow stainless muffler, resonator delete
The muffler was $50. Another made in the USA option. Had my exhaust guy (Babes and Lightning in San Jose) cut out the rusted and punctured stock box and weld this in. The resonator was trashed, so he replaced that with a turndown - looks completely stock and is tucked up higher than the factory box. Also quite a bit lighter. It also sounds VERY nice. At idle, I have a nice low burble and at freeway speeds there is a very slight increase in noise. At WOT, you can tell there's something different, but volume levels are low. With the windows up, it is still refined and quiet. (though my factory exhaust was rusted out, so it wasn't as quiet as a new factory exhaust)

* Alpine CD/MP3/iPod stereo running through the STOCK AMPS to Clarion speakers (yes, it all works)
Get the Metra wiring harness for a 1995 Discovery. Use it to hook up the amplifiers to your preouts on the new receiver. Throw away the harness for the receiver power and just do good splices. Speakers are a matter of unscrewing and reattaching, though I did go with the new grilles - the LR speaker grilles were brittle and dying. The Clarions I used (4" coaxials) have very good clean sound with the stock amp. The Alpine has a USB dongle that I have plugged into a 4gb jump drive. This gives me 800 songs. I have four jump drives, labeled with categories: general (my current iTunes playlist), road trip (big drive with 2000 songs), mellow (romantic girlfriend songs), and loud (old school rap, classic rock, alternative, hard country)

* Yokohama Geolandar AT's in 215/85-16 (no rub, and they made my speedometer perfectly accurate)
I have had these tires before - very quiet and responsive on the pavement with no tramlining and long life. Great in wet/snowy conditions. I haven't done any super hardcore offroading on Geolandars, but they did fine in Hollister and my brother has loved them on his Xterra.
* Hella 700(?) driving lights
They're big and came with the car. I like them because they're brighter than any high beams coming my way

* Cobra 400/800 peak inverter, hardwired under driver seat
Technically it's not as cleanly installed as I would like. I am in an online degree program, and we meet for three-hour blocks twice a week. I sit in the truck in the McDonalds parking lot and this keeps my computer charged... I'm happy
