Black Bear Pass in a 4Runner?

Hello All, I’ll be heading out in August to do some exploring in my 5th gen 4Runner and was wondering if any of you have run Black Bear in a mostly stock 4Runner? Mine has been leveled and I’ve got sliders. I’ve run Black Bear and the whole Alpine Loop on my BMW R1200GS several times so I’m familiar with the terrain. That said, I was looking at these from the perspective of a motorcycle, not a truck.
I’m pretty confident off road but still wanted to get some insight from anyone who has done this in this rig so I can make a better decision as to if I should do this, or not.

Thanks in advance for the tips.

Cheers, James

The 4Runner can do it but you will need a good spotter on a couple of switchbacks.

One other suggestion: Don't bring a nervous German lady along :)

dont be this guy

Yea I saw that on the 4Runner forum. Definitely going to do it but not going to follow that line, yikes. After doing it on my loaded BMW 1200GS these vids make it look easy. On the bike it was a pucker trip for sure, I was clenching so much I pulled the vinyl off my seat!

Drove my 1st gen Ford Expedition down it last week. Easy peasy.

The only part that had a mild pucker factor is the freeze frame for the 2nd video above. Apparently called "the steps". The switchbacks were easy- even in a full size.

Its no problem if you use some common sense. I planned to take mine through, but I got rid of it for a Nissan Frontier which will go through this year. I took a 2dr jk through a few years ago with an 80 series behind. no issues at all.

My wife is the same, no accent, but same comments. I have great photos of me going down Black Bear because she walked behind the rig for most of it. Not spotting, just scared. As for a 4runner going at it, it should be no issue. Just be smart. I went with my wife and dogs, and just self spotted. Puckered up twice, probably on the steps or whatever they are calling it.

^yep- that was really the only “hairy” spot of the whole trail. IMO anyway. But maybe I have ice coarsening through my veins.

No problems what so ever with a stock Pro.
