FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Black Dog Cycle Works announces new skid plate for BMW R1200GS / GSA

– Sandpoint, ID
Introduction Black Dog Cycle Works (BDCW) is pleased to announce their new skid plate for the BMW R1200GS / GS Adventure. Renowned for their rugged skid plates for the KTM 950/990 Adventure and 950 Super Enduro, BDCW has leveraged their experience with those motorcycles to develop the most advanced skid plate available for the BMW R1200GS / GSA. It offers the MOST protection of the engine case and header pipes – PERIOD.
Body Unlike the stock or other aftermarket skid plates, BDCW does NOT utilize the stock rubber shear bolts that thread into the engine block to mount the skid plate. “When we started looking at the components of the bike and the utilization of the rubber shear bolts which thread into the engine block, we were a bit baffled as to why anyone thought that was a good idea” said Kurt Forgét, owner and chief tester of Black Dog Cycle Works. He went on to say “the rubber shear bolts allow the stock and other aftermarket skid plates to basically fall off the bike if a frontal impact occurs. How does this design protect the bike? Not only do you have to carry the skid plate on your luggage rack for the remainder of your ride, your bike is left with absolutely NO protection. It is no wonder some of the other brands’ skid plates have literally ‘littered the course’ at adventure competitions. Also, there have been reported instances where a rider has landed on the stock or aftermarket skid plate which has driven the rubber shear bolt through the bottom of the case, cracking the case and instantly losing the engine oil, which in our opinion is what a skid plate should AVOID. Threading anything into the engine block as a mounting point is NOT a good idea and can quickly end your days ride not to mention cost you a bundle to fix.”

So how is the BDCW skid plate different? It suspends the rear of the skid plate vertically from the frame and completely isolates the rear of the engine case from impact. The front of the skid plate is secured via a through-bolt on the front of the engine, which is an extremely sturdy part of the bike’s design. BDCW has also added large rubber “shok bloks” between the skid plate and the bottom of the engine to soften any substantial blows. This kit includes a center stand guard and as a bonus once the supporting framework is installed, it is only necessary to remove six bolts to allow you to change the oil.

This skid plate is a MUST HAVE for the serious off-road rider on a R1200GS or R1200GS Adventure. Give yourself piece of mind while riding off-road, potentially save yourself a lot of coin by not cracking your case and avoid a long walk home while leaving your bike abandoned in the middle of nowhere. Both you and your bike deserve better.
