I have a new 2012 Ram Megacab, diesel 4x4. I'm looking to set it up as a very moderate outback/offroad vehicle.

Like many here, I enjoy the tips and tricks but too many of them are geared towards cross-country or cross-continent expeditions. I plan to use my truck for (in simple terms) camping. Dirt roads and maybe an occasional trip to the desert. I live in the southwest so there is plenty of that here.

I'm looking for ideas and realistic modifications that can make those weekends easier and more enjoyable. Things like gear-packing solutions, racks, lights, etc... What have you done to your truck?

Things I plan on doing once I find some money:

Tires - Nothing drastic because I do pull a trailer and already need to drop the hitch.
Nerf Bars/Step Rails - I'm not sure if I want to go Wheel-to-wheel or just cab length. Thoughts?
Bed Rails - Possibly some sort of headache rack too. I have a sliding back window so I'm not sure how that will look.
Tonneau cover - Folding or rolling. I'm not sure on this one because they have always looked like they just get in the way.
Bully Bar, winch, lights up front - I like the Westin with a warn winch. What have you done up front to yours?
Thule Cargo Rack - On top of the cab but with the sunroof I'm not sure if it would work.

I know it seems like I'm way below the caliber of the vehicles here but I figured this would be the place to go. Any pictures or other feedback would be great.

-Cheers

No need to re-invent the wheel

My first suggestion would be to spend some time (quite a bit of it actually) going through some of the existing posts that are in this forum. There is already a lot of information available and you will gather pretty much what you need to get started.
Secondly, I suggest you do not get anything that you have not seen a need for in your style of driving. Folks travel at all levels of vehicle and driver ability and there is no need to spend money on items just because someone else has found that they like that item. Nerf bars and step rails are more cosmetic than functional though sliders and a well built bumper that allows you better aproach angles are handy. But again find out what you need then upgrade. The best part is as you stated earlier; getting out and camping. Good luck.
