Blitz gas cans, work for me.....

I think I must be an exception to the "Blitz" gas cans are junk opinion. I have 4 and they accompanied me on 2 round trips to northern Quebec this past summer, James Bay region on the James Bay road x 2, the North Road x 2, then a second trip, James Bay road again x 2 and the Trans-Tiaga road to the end and back, North and Trans-Tiaga road are gravel, james Bay paved, a trip out and back to the Cree native towns of Wemindji and Chisasibi the former a gravel road the latter paved. My point is that over thousands of miles in a remote area my 4 Blitz cans did not leak one drop (CARB cans) with spout, (not counting getting to where the James Bay region began x 2) I made a device to tighten the caps however that made them easier to tighten down and seal. I have no complaints whatsoever about them and they will go again with me on my trip over the Trans-Labrador trip I am planning for 2011. They will ride on my hitch haul, on my Ford Ranger PU that has a Leer cap that I can sleep in, rack/basket on top for 2nd spare tire and misc. other gear. My story, stay safe everyone, mjmcdowell

no, no, you're wrong, wrong I tell you, wrong!

Just kidding. I've got all 3 types (Blitz WWII US GI type, Scepter and Nato/Jerry.) I believe the key to leakage on the Blitz type has to do with the fact that the gasket is not always (depending on the cap) clamped flat and that the screw in lid does not completely capture the gasket.

I've noticed that some (maybe all?) lids must be made by stamping and the flange that bears on the gasket is not always 100% flat. When that's the case the lid tends to squeeze unevenly, being tighter on the inner edge and looser on the outer. This may not matter much with a new gasket but after a while the uneven clamping and aging gasket will prevent a good seal which results in seepage or leaks.

With the other two types of cans the gasket is held in place in such a way that it has to be squeezed flat against the can's gasket mating surface and can't move or ooze anywhere else.

Millions carry the Blitz type and they work well enough for most people as yours do for you. Good gaskets and properly flat caps are key.

Bring old tread back from the dead.

I bought 2 Blitz metal gas can (used). I used them over the weekend for an offroad trip. They leaked crazy at the cap. I think the rubber gaskets were bad. They were bend out of shape.
Where can I get new one or I have to make them?

Try using double rubber gaskets before you buy new cans. I don't use them anymore but it worked when I did.

I never really had any issues with the cans themselves. Yes, the seals crack and leak over time but they're cheap and easy to replace. My biggest peeve with them is the cheap ******** spouts they sell. They leak more than the can's ever do. I like the Nato cans because with my series rover I can just pour straight into the filler neck. No spout required!

I use two hole saws (two different sizes) to cut new seals from rubber sheet. Cut the outer first then the inner, . Make sure you generously cover the tiny vent hole in the flange, that is where they usually leak. Works for me and cant get any cheaper. I must have 30 jerry cans here and about 6-8 spouts (the good ones). I have all sorts of spouts and even two aluminum cans (I have only ever seen my two). I have about 8-10 REAL military can holders as well, they are much heavier stamping.

I had the local rubber supply cut me about 10 gaskets. Just had to buy a square foot of the material and they cut it for free. I think it was $10. Used thicker rubber than original and cut generously, they work perfectly.

I have used them for years, never had a problem. I just make sure the cap is on tight. They might lack bling, but for the price ya can't beat them.

I've abused the heck out of mine and they still work great. On the Jeep I don't even have to remove them to fuel, I just use a siphon hose right into the tank.
