I have a couple of the small cig outlet style including the Griffin you show. Some people have reported that they do indeed charge their iPads. Sadly, I have not had that experience. They work great for the iPhone, but don't seem to charge the iPad.

We keep running into the same problem with all our Apple products. They're very picky. Not to get off track here, but have you figured out what the iPad wants for voltage? We tried charging ours on the last trip with some goal0 products and it didn't like it, nor did the ipod shuffle, or the iphone. It was irritating to have all this power, but couldn't get it into our devices.

My verizon smartphone is the same way. It needs to "Verizon" badged USB cord.. or it won't charge.

It gets frustrating to say the least. I'd spend $20 on the blueseas if i knew it would work. Anyone see one , in stock yet?

I don't know the voltage specs the iPad needs unfortunately. LandCruiserPhil above posted that this place has the BlueSea units: http://www.tacticalwholesalers.com/...ket--2-USB-Ports-wWatertight-Cap_p_27064.html

I can officially tell you that the Blue Sea unit will not only charge your iPad or your iPhone, but it will charge them both at the same time. I tested it the minute I got it by directly hooking it up to the battery. Now all I have to do is permanently mount it in my center console with a 3-5 amp fuse from my Blue Sea fuse box.

I don't have an iPad, but in my research, it needs to be able to pull 2 amps for quick charge from a USB port. Older (pre-iPad) USB plugs are limited to 1 amp generally, since that was enough for the time, not to mention computer USB ports are .5 amp. Some of the dual port USB plus claim 2 amp, but that is 1 amp for each port, and some you have to hack to get a single port to be capable of 2 amp.

It does sound like the BlueSea is 2 amp for a single port, and to be honest they would be idiots to bring out a new product that can't do that. It sounds like Beowulf has verified it.

I have the griffen dual plug shown above. We use it to charge htc phones and a nook at the same time. Do apple products pull that much more. We dont have any but i am looking at a new phone.

Only with the latest iPad should you worry. They had to double the battery size to keep the run time the same as the previous generation. This means that it either needs to take a long time to charge on low current (17 hours 0-100% via computer USB), medium time with medium current (9 hours with 1 amp charger), short time with high current (6 hours at 2 amp).

The iPhone I believe will only use 1 amp max, so almost any current 12v socket converter will work for phones.

Just so every one knows the main reason a lot of devices will charge in some 2+amp sockets and not others is that there needs to be a signal on the data pins. The two outside pins are + and - 5.0VDC. The center two pins handle data and a 150 ohm resistor across the data pins is all that is needed to tell most devices (gen 1 IPad verified) that they can use 2A. So in summary all that is needed is a 12V to 5V DC to DC step down buck converter a USB female socket and a 150 ohm resistor.

Just wanted to provide a report after having this installed for a bit and having used it many times. It has performed great with both the iPad and iPhone. It is nice to not have to have the adapter and use an available 12v outlet. Those can be used for other things. With the dedicated USB port, I find myself actually using it more.

I just wanted everyone to know that Socal Teardrops has the Blueseas USB dual socket with indicator in stock right now. It's not listed on their site, but give them a shout if you're looking. I just ordered two.
