Owners of Land Rover Discovery, BMW X5, Mercedes GLE, Audi Q7, Lexus LX and other big SUVs have noticed that their third row of seats is really for children. Jeep Grand Cherokee owners are in the same boat. That’s why Jeep is working on a new longer SUV for 2021 (maybe to be called Grand Wagoneer, and maybe based on a RAM 1500 chassis).
And now BMW is showing the new X7, with a wheelbase longer than the X5, and a third row adults can use. The X7 will compete with Mercedes GLS, and especially with Range Rover’s long wheelbase variant.
To match Range Rover’s off-road prowess, the X7 will include full air suspension, active sway control, rock, sand, mud and snow terrain modes, side steps that double as rocker panel protection, improved under body protection, and a nifty variable electronic limited slip rear differential. No mention of low range in the reviews I read.
The new X7 will cost about the same as the Range Rover, figure $80 to $100K and beyond. The X7 should make it to dealer lots in a year or so.
