Bolt on roof rack or drip rail style for unlimited 4 door?

I just bought a 2008 Unlmimited 4 door, and was trying to figure out the best way to secure a Maggiolina to it. I see some are using basket style racks( Wild Boar, Congo CAge etc) , while others have attached to the hard tops drip rail. What are the benefits and draw backs of each?

Thanks
Ken

:sombrero: I don't use a RTT, but this MBRP JK Rack will support over 700 lbs and I would imagine that it would be ideal for the RTT

The only drawback toit is, when you remove the top, the rack goes withit

They now sell the rack with full coverage options-basket, front section and light bar

I have no idea what the cost is--mbrpinc.com

I'm not sure how strong the drip rail would be. Might be fine just sitting there with weight on it but anything offroad might break it. I have a wilderness rack on my unlimited and still can take the top off and keep the rack.

I roll a MBRP rack with a RTT. Mine is the newer style (squared off ends) and I was told it holds 900lb. Its plenty for a 120lb tent and two people. I love it. As Jimbo said, you take off the top, the rack goes too. But it makes getting the top off easy and when we go on a camping trip, I want the roof on anyhow incase it rains. And its more security.

I just received my new Gobi Stealth rack, which I ordered from Tim at Expedition Hardware and had it in one week. Talk about great turn around time and service! The rack arrived well packaged, and the fit and finish, and quality of the hardware was amazing. Install was pretty easy as well. I still have to install the wind deflector, but here it is so far.
I mounted the rack and two kayaks and drove 1000 mi round trip on my vacation to Maine. No problems at all. Rock solid rack. And it works with the hardtop on or off. Best looking roof rack in my opinion as well.

There's a point most MBRP Rack owners never thought of--

The rack, being secured to the jeep tub is an additional ROLLBAR safety addition, in case of a roll over !!!

Now ain't that kewl ??

Thanks Jim. Like a lot of us MBRP rack guys, your Jeep was the first inspitation to even consider this rack. I was really torn between this and the Gobi. The Gobi is a awesome looking rack. I just didnt really need the rack to go all the way to the front, and if I did, I liked that I could just add on to the existing MBRP rack. And a lot of Gobi owners complain about the noise it makes on the highway. The MBRP is not even noticeable. And the 2" bars just look meaner....

Which one do you have and do you have trouble getting a LEVEL spot for your JKU, so you can sleep ??

I just put a Raingler net on mine, to make it a little easier to secure crap !!

Thanks for the input guys.

The MRBP does not lend itself to mounting of my RTT.Columbus X long. It would leave quite a bit of the tent unsupported.

Some have said that the Gobi cause alot of wind noise.

What are the Gobl and Wid Boar like for noise.?

Can they be taken off easily? (my wife hates the look of a rack)

The Gobi is only a little loud when the top is down. You can not really hear it with the top up or roof panels on. Gobi also now makes a front wind deflector which cuts down a lot of the noise. It also uses stock mounting locations, so no drilling what so ever. The rack ties into the chaisis, making it one of the most solid racks out there. Hands down the best rack money can buy for the JK.

Kyle and I have the basic rack, but there are options that will extend the rack all the way to the windshield of your jeep and you can op for their basket also

I believe the Gobi has quick disconnects not only for the front to allow it to be tipped back for the soft top to be put down, but I think they have something for the back to allow the whole thing to be taken off. Check with them first but I could swear I saw some pics like that on the jk-forum
