Yo Kyle, i've got three tents and never considered a RTT

Which one do you have and do you have trouble getting a LEVEL spot for your JKU, so you can sleep ??

:costumed-smiley-007:wings: JIMBO

I have a Mombassa Expedition Plus series tent. It is nothing short of amazing. I had a little trouble this last weekend in the mountains, but after a few minutes of playing around I got it level. The fact that there were bear sightings everywhere, and how everyone else was sleeping on the ground, made me not worry too much about haveing to take an extra minutes or two to get level. I sleep over six feet off the gound haha! I have the owners name and number of the place in Oregon I got mine from, if you (or anyone else) is wanting more info. Dfenetly the best deal I found.

-And Jims right, look at the MBRP rack extension on their base rack before you go thowing that suggestion out. After all the research I did on these racks, I was not happy about 15 out of 20 people complaining about the noise the Gobi makes. YES it is a bad *** rack. So is the MBRP. Check them both out.

I vote GOBI. ..but than again, I'm partial to their products. I have had 10 rigs with their racks on them to date. not one issue.

P7180137.jpg

btw- the GOBi Recon with the fairing AND lights to fill in the open spaces up front, really do quiet the rack down. not much wind noise over stock. With the freedom pannels off, it's quiet. I have ran the rack without the fairing as well. night and day difference! And than add the recon style over standard, and again it's just a bit more quiet.

The quick release up front allows the rack to hinge back. It takes 5 minutes or less to pull both front pins, loosen two knobs up front, two in the back, hinge the rack, remove your soft top, and attach it back in place. Freedom panels come out without tilting the rack back.

If you want to take the rack off, two bolts in there (leaves the mounts to the frame in place, and front ligtbar in place. You do have to remove the ladder, but can be hoisted like you do with the hardtops, but is best to remove the rear support bar from the rack and than the two bolts.

Rack looks great!!!

I just received my new Gobi Stealth rack, which I ordered from Tim at Expedition Hardware and had it in one week. Talk about great turn around time and service! The rack arrived well packaged, and the fit and finish, and quality of the hardware was amazing. Install was pretty easy as well. I still have to install the wind deflector, but here it is so far.
I mounted the rack and two kayaks and drove 1000 mi round trip on my vacation to Maine. No problems at all. Rock solid rack. And it works with the hardtop on or off. Best looking roof rack in my opinion as well.

:sombrero: willy, you're selling the MBRP short, because-- !!

Kyle and I have the basic rack, but there are options that will extend the rack all the way to the windshield of your jeep and you can op for their basket also

Thanks Jimbo, It was your reply that had me contact them for clairification on the full rack. They very quickly sent me some pictures of the full setup.

Now to see if the local dealer will do business!!!:coffeedrink:

I have had the Gobi for a year and with a Maggolina Extreme RTT on it. I took 6 months and looked hard at what was available at the time and decided on the Gobi Rack. I got back Friday from a 3,450 mile adventure with the JK and still feel it is the best rack for my uses. As with any rack with a tent it cost a couple of MPG with fuel.

Do you have a picture of the Maggiolina on the rack? It may set da bride at ease with this set up.
She wants it to be a quick set up, and something we can quickly remove from the Jeep during the non camping times here in the North!!

It must be able to handle a Columbus X long in the long run( my tent on a trailer for this trip) but for this trip the girls will be sleeping on the rack in a Maggiolna.
Mom is worried about bears in the North and want the girls up high!!

I have some basic questions. Looking for a rack for a RTT for a 2 door JK. First question, it seems like all the RTT's are for the Unlimiteds. Is a RTT even made for the 2 door models?

Second question is, it seems like most racks connect into the sheet metal in the rear. Is this really sufficient for a RTT? I was thinking that it should be tied into the frame or bumper somehow for added strength?

Seems like building a 2 door overlander keeps getting more difficult (don't want to go with a trailer).

Thanks.

By the way Willy...didn't mean to hijack your thread.

No worries, It's all about roof racks!

RTT's are not made for unlimited's or two doors, or trucks, or Land Rovers. They are not made for anything specific. They are universal. And yes they absolutly WILL fit on top of a two door. I have seen this a lot.

The roof top tents are indeed pretty much a universal mount. It is more a matter of space than vehicle type. Most all of them will fit on a 2 door model.

Roof top tents range from under a hundred pounds up to just over two hundred, depending on the model. But most are under 150. The main concern is dynamic weight, or having that weight in motion on a roof. A roof top tent is roughly equal to 4 full 20L fuel cans on the roof, with a bigger footprint to spread the load. When stationary, most of the weight of the folks in the tent is transferred straight down to the suspension. A simple vertical load.

The other item to consider is whether you are using the rack for other activities. If not, a rack under a tent is a redundant system and perhaps a good set of load bars would make more economical and day to day sense.

One item to check is the Front Runner rack and load bar options. They are pretty nice, light weight, manage wind noise pretty well, and mount directly to the hard top. Alexis at American Overland Expeditions and Dave at Front Runner Outfitters have been running these racks with roof top tents on their JKs for some time now without any problem. The load bar sets they offer are close to half the cost of a rack system, and would support a tent just fine.

Cheers,

I went with the Kargo Master Congo Rack. I set the tent on it last night and took it for a test drive today. Next trip, The Cape Breton Highlands!!

My Tj has a Garvin Wilderness rack...love it. But for a JK...Go with a Gobi. Not only are they a solid rack, they are sleek in desgin. I know a few people that run the Gobi rack with an RTT...it is a solid combo. In my opinion, all the other racks are strong, but they all are missing the sleek design. But...with that said, its your rig and build it for you.

Fyi...lots of good looking rigs in this topic.
