bought a '91 LWB

Hey guys, I just purchased a '91 LWB Montero and I'm actually very excited! This is my first 4wd vehicle and I've got a couple of probably very easy and obvious questions.

1st easy question:
The vin plate on the door jam says the wheels are 15x6...I'm thinking I would really like to go up to a 31x10.5 tire and I've read that this tire will fit...are you guys really running that wide of a tire on that size wheel without any issues? It just seems like the wheel is too narrow to safely fit that size tire.

2nd question:
Being that this is my first 4wd vehicle and it did not come with an owner's manual...should the transfer case selector be in the Neutral position or the 2H position for normal everyday driving? I know this seems like a stupid question but I figured I should probably ask before I jump to an assumption and do some kind of damage. If there's a source online for the owner's manual that would be great as well :sombrero:

I don't own a 1st gen, but I'm pretty sure the tires will fit.

Also, for regular everyday driving, the transfer case needs to be in the 2H position.

Hey thanks!

I really appreciate the response. I feel like an idiot having to ask but I tend to worry about these types of things a little more than I should.

I'll try to get some pictures of my new rig up after work. I can't believe I'm this excited! I purchased this thing to get me through some of the less motorcycle friendly days this winter but I can tell already that I'm going to end up spending more on it than I should. :coffeedrink:

No worries, I really couldn't wrap my head around the idea of that size tire on the 15x6 wheel. I had no idea there were two different sizes stock and mine look very similar to the pictures I've seen. Easy way to get confused.

I've started looking at some wheels and I may just go ahead and pull the trigger on some 15x8 steelies.

Thanks again guys!

No worries. Many did come with steel 15x6 stock wheels. The 15x7 wheels are aluminum. HTH. :smiley_drive:

I ran 31x1050s on stock steelies for three years... no ideal, and you will see some cupping in the tread after a while, but they do fit.

After that I put 33x950s on the 6's, and again, they fit. Much better wear pattern though.

My last gen I had 8" wheels with 33x1250s. With some minor cranking of the torsion bars, they fit fine too. These rigs have lots of wheel well space, so *fitting* the tires is not really an issue.
