Bought my first Mercedes G wagen

Hey everyone,

After 4 long years of searching and waiting for a G wagen to come up for sale within my price range i have finally purchased one. It is a 1988 Mercedes 280G lwb. The downside to the vehicle is the gas engine and automatic transmission as well as the usual rust. I am from around the GTA in Ontario and found this car out in Calgary, AB. After talking with the owner for over a month and trying to get him to get the vehicle inspected for me i decided to fly out and check it out myself. I was in Calgary for less then 12 hours but i got when i went for lol. I purchased the truck for $3250 down for the original asking price of $5000. The vehicle will be shipped to my house near the GTA in the next week and a half. I look forward to the car arriving and posting more pictures of the truck.

I have a lot of plans for the truck including an engine swap with either a om617 or om606 and a manual transmission. If anyone has any feedback they can provide it would be appreciated as i am no expert yet.

If there are any other G owners in the GTA or southern Ontario area please let me know .

Thanks

Literally. the owner was going to part the vehicle and sell it as parts. The body needs a bit of work but its still in great condition overall

Thanks. Im just trying to figure out exactly what i want to add to it. Can someone give me any advice on what suspension i should install or the tires i should get for it. I want to get something for all terrain and was looking at Firestone Destination A/T,

The tire size is 265/60/ r18

On the tire front us Land Rover LR3/4 guys are familier with the troubles fianding good options in that size range. A lot of us run 265 or 275/65-18s. There are options out there, like the new BFG AT KO2, the Goodyear u, and the Cooper AT3 or ST Maxx. Of those, I'd lean toward the ST Maxx but it really depends on what your plans for the rig are.

(says the guy waiting for the STT Pros to become available in his size)

Congrats on your new purchase!

Do you mind taking some photos of the rear tire mount? Most of the modern G's I see have the wheel mounted backwards, and was curious to see what the stock mount part looks like.

I know. The rear spare is the original 15' Rim. Im wondering how much bigger i can go in terms of tire size because i went to one tire place and was told i cant increase the size. ??

I will add more pictures once the truck arrives at my place. Yes i know the truck has a lot of body rust but i am going to get most if not all of my parts from euro truck importers or fourbyfourclub. If anyone knows a cheaper body parts supplier please let me know.

"Can't" means THEY can't do it, likely due to liability policy. You CAN put whatever size you want on it. Just depends on how much time and money you want to spend on making the suspension properly work to clear those 33s or 35s. If you can find the right 17" wheel, I think a 285/75-17 would be about the perfect size under a G.
