Bought my M101...let the mods begin!

Its getting dropped off today. My plan is pretty mild; lid, new receiver, new lights. I like a lot of what I've seen on here. No plans for a RTT as we plan on sleeping in the truck bed along with a truck tent for changing and such. I hope I can get something for the wheels and tires he has on it now so that I can change them out to something a bit more versatile. I may do a SOA depending on how it sits with my mildly lifted truck.

very nice.

just a thought because i have the same trailer, those thornbirds will throw lots of rocks at the nice paint on your tow rig they stick so far out past the fenders.

Thanks for the replies. I really like the condition of the trailer. The rims/tires/paintjob need to go, but otherwise it is a great trailer. Anyone know where you can get 6x5.5 hubs for an M101?

Here's how I did it on my M101CDN-

http://www.trailerpart.com/35ktraileraxle.htm

Bought that axle in a 6x5.5 bolt pattern hub.

I got it in a 57" length, but wish I'd have gotten it in a 53" length because my stance is very wide now (though that may have unseen advantages in stability).

Bought some 6x5.5 hubs for the M101 from Southwest Wheel.

They will allow me to run the FJ Cruiser wheels that I also bought today. The wheels will match my 4Runner and allow me to carry one spare (I'll have two extra if anyone wants them). I also sent my lid design to a metal shop. The design is like others I've seen here. It mirrors the upper part of the tub (tapers inward). I'll post some pics when the new wheels are on. I am having a hard time finding matching Nitto Terra Grapplers that are gently used. I don't want to drop the kind of cash necessary for new tires to go on a trailer. Worst case is to use just any AT tire in 265/70/17.

i got that exact setup for my 6 bolt drums. nice find on the trailer too. saw your post over on mud. interested in seeing your lid design. i researched extensively both here and mud for some great lid ideas. those wheels on there now are definitely rock chuckers. good choice in the FJ wheels, the oem backspace & 7 inch width should get more of the tire under the flare.

I've never installed new hubs before. I thought I would just figure it out as I went. Any tips?

I may still have to extend the fenders to cover 265's. We will see.

As far as the lid, I want it to look something like this:

That trailer was custom build IIRC but I like the lid style

I haven't decided if I want a front hinge or side hinge for the lid? Any suggestions?

Side hinge, no question. When you have a tent on top, a side hinge allows you to still lift the lid up with the tent deployed (assuming it deploys to the side). And place your tent so that the ladder side is the side your hinge is on, so that you can do that.

Question about your tarp?

Is that the original GMA cover corp 1/4 ton trailer tarp but, painted black? Any idea what paint was used? OBTW, that desert camo is a trip:sombrero:

I am pretty sure that the tarp isn't painted. I haven't looked closely, but the inside is green and has a stencil of a lunnette ring and an arrow pointing in the direction it is supposed to be. Could it be reversible?

The camo is more than a trip. Supposedly it was painted by a nationally renown custom motorcycle builder in Des Moines, Iowa. I won't shed a tear when it gets painted over. Since there is NO rust, I may just rough it up and paint over it.

Yup that sounds like the genuine CDN issue tarp but, I have never seen a black one, they have all been three color woodland camo.
