I would prefer brifters to bar end for punchy climbs. They also aid in control in muddy and slick riding conditions. I say that, due to the great hand position they offer. If you would be traveling in more desolate locations, I may look into bar end shifters. They are more durable and crash worthy, with greater MacGyverability.(if it's not a word, it should be
